As a fish owner, you want to create the happiest, healthiest possible environment for your pet. To do this, you'll need the right aquarium supplies. In addition to a fish tank, you'll need a water thermometer, a heater, a filter, a light, gravel or sand, a gravel vacuum, live or fake plants, non-toxic decorations, a fine fish net, a water-testing kit and water-softening chemicals.
Once your aquarium is set up, you'll need to perform certain basic chores to provide your fish with ongoing care. "Cycle" the tank by letting it sit for a while before putting in your fish. This allows naturally occurring bacteria to build up and create a healthy balance in the water. Each week, use a water-testing kit to check your water's pH levels and chemical balance, and use your net to sift out floating waste. Refresh the water supply by changing 25 to 30 percent of what's in the tank. Each month, clean the interior of the glass with an algae scraper and wipe the outside with a damp cloth. Periodically vacuum the gravel and sift out waste that's settled at the bottom.
At Walmart, you'll find Everyday Low Prices on the supplies you need to care for your finned friends. Save money. Live better.
