As Froemke trails these singers through their preparations and to their final appearances, she assembles some appealing portraiture but not much drama. The mood here is far more genteel and collegial than in many a competition documentary.
However overworked the format may be, from American Idol to Miss America, there's no denying the fresh punch of a candid new documentary standing at a different end of the artistic spectrum -- The Audition.
overall, this movie is slow. It takes a while to develope the characters, and even longer to get to the audition. If you stick it out until the end, you will be shocked at what you see. Voted as one of the top 100 scariest scenes of all time, the ending of this movie will haunt you for the rest of your life. I recommend watching this movie with its original japanese dialogue and english subtitles for full effect.
