Director Amy Heckerling has failed to provide the raunch or poignancy that would interest young moviegoers, all of whom have seen American Graffiti and its 467 imitators. Ridgemont High? A nice place to visit, but who would want to transfer there?
The film squeaks in its joints whenever it tries too hard to make a 'generational statement,' and may annoy you with its glibness, but it manages to hold one's interest -- surprisingly at times, given the lightweight characters.
Mr. Bridges may not have breathed fire into this material, but he has preserved most of its better qualities. He has treated it with intelligence, respect and no undue reverence, assembling a coherent film that resists any hint of exploitation.
