This is the movie that would later become the inspirartion for the successful TV series that would run for four seasons on ABC back in the sixties. Walter pidgeon is excellent as Admiral Harriman Nelson, creator of the fantastic glass nosed submarine Seaview. During the sub's shakedown in the artic, the crew surfaces from a trip beneath the polar ice to discover the sky in flames. Soon reports are coming in about worldwide devestation caused the atmoesperic fire, and Nelson hatches a daring plan to stop it, namely to launch and explode a nuclear missle to blast the burning radiation away from the planet. A rival scientest is opposed to the plan and the Seaview soon becomes a hunted ship. Judged by todays standards, the special effects seem a little cheesy, especially the giant squid that attacks a diving party, but the story still grips me the way it did when I was kid first seeing the movie on a saturday afternoon. Other stars fill out the ensemble including Peter Lorre as Nelson's colleauge, Barbra Eden as Nelson's va-va-voom secretary, Teen heartthrob Frankie Avalon as a young officer, and Micheal Ansarra as a religous zealot with his own reasons for stopping the Seaview's mission. I highly reccomend this film to all Voyage fans and to anyone else who likes a good adventure yarn.
