The performance of Gary Cooper in the title role holds the picture together magnificently, and even the most unfavorable touches are made palatable because of him. | |
The first half is quite good, documenting York's rural upbringing with great simplicity and charm. But the second part -- the war -- degenerates quickly and grotesquely. |

This movie is touching, moving and at times, you may find yourself shedding a tear or two.\nThis is a true story about a poor young man from the back hills of Tenn. who becomes an American hero. He wins our countrie's highest military honor, \"The Congressional Medal of Honor\". Several years ago I read about this young war hero, named Alvin York and I actually saw his name written on a wall in a room at the Pentagon in Washington DC. There were hundreds of names honoring all those Americans who have won the \"Medal of Honor\". Anyway, when I saw this movie on TV awhile back, I couldn't believe how well the actor Gary Cooper, portrayed Alvin York. This movie I believe is not just a war movie, but it captures the true ascents, honesty and charactor of this man, Alvin York, A True American. So when this Dvd came out I had to have it. I wish it was in Color, but even in Black & White it is still worth it.

In certain ways, Jim Rockford resembles the hard-boiled detectives from the 1940's: he takes on cases that start off \"innocently\" enough but become very complicated, gets beat up a lot, and is always involved with a pretty girl.\nOn the other hand, he does not carry a gun and often uses his wit and guile to solve the case. And he lives in a broken-down trailer home by the ocean.\nJames Garner provides his charm and humor to make this an enjoyable and successful series. Many of the plots involve scams, ruses, and fast-talking. One has to wonder, though, how he sustains himself when he often gets gypped out his fees and reward money. Nevertheless, fun to watch.

loading product information This review is not about the classic movies included in the collection. I have seen all the movies several times and overall, I like and appreciate the collection. The problem was the picture quality was so poor they were almost not watchable. Until someone does a much better job on restoring and transfering these classic films, I recommend...forget about it!
