Dark City trades in such weighty themes as memory, thought control, human will and the altering of reality, but is engaging mostly in the degree to which it creates and sustains a visually startling alternate universe.
Wal-Mart's price and shipping costs were excellent and I rated the product accordingly. As for the movie itself...well...\nI love good fiction and fantasy. This movie obviously has an undeserved cult following and I fell for the overwhelmingly good reviews. Silly me. Bad plot, bad direction, terrible acting by Kiefer Sutherland, in particular. The rest of the cast did as good a job as they could with a terrible script and the even more terrible plot. I was, needless to say, extremely disappointed. I resold it (at a loss) as soon as I was done watching it.
Mr. Bridges may not have breathed fire into this material, but he has preserved most of its better qualities. He has treated it with intelligence, respect and no undue reverence, assembling a coherent film that resists any hint of exploitation.
