Dick Van Patten's acting career began in 1937 when he appeared in The Eternal Road on Broadway. Having appeared in over a dozen plays by the time he was a teenager, Van Patten moved on to television and film roles, with guest appearances in Rawhide and Mama. However, his best-known role came in 1977 with the premiere of Eight Is Enough. Van Patten played patriarch Tom Bradford for the show's entire run. A favorite of director Mel Brooks, Van Patten appeared in several of his films, including High Anxiety, Spaceballs, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
