Desmond Tutu is a South African social rights activist and retired archbishop who is known for his work against apartheid. Although he began his career as a high school teacher, Tutu began studying to become a priest after three years of teaching. Tutu later used his acquired celebrity from his apartheid activism to head campaigns against homophobia, AIDS, tuberculosis, and other social issues. Tutu won a Nobel Prize in 1984, a Schweitzer Prize in 1986, and other humanitarian awards in recognition of his work.
