What might have been an African-American gangland epic with a killer soundtrack treads safely as a run-of-the-mill biopic.
Notorious is a pretty standard biopic, and is probably largely compromised. If you've never seen Nick Broomfield's excellent 2002 doco Biggie And Tupac, you'd be better served hunting that down instead. |

First-time director James Gartner observes all the rituals--the coach busting chops, the team sneaking out to party--but the players are indifferently characterized and the civil rights story has a fake Black History Month feel.
Glory Road is a rousing and worthy tribute to one of the most important college basketball teams and one of the most important championship games of all time. |

Lee is a filmmaker who, through talent, accomplishment, and a constant working of the refs in the Hollywood system, has earned autonomy over his films. I'm all for artistic freedom, but here he could have used a bit of oversight.
It's impressive that a filmmaker of Lee's distinction is willing to continue to push boundaries. |

Washington is customarily solid as the naval shrink, but directs without imagination or flair, sticking to Hollywood conventions and skimming over the harsher aspects of Fisher's life.
A mind-numbing, soul-deadeningly dull experience, it is a miracle of mediocrity, a small wonder: how can anything be quite this tedious? |

The real violence, as is always the case with Mamet, lies not in the mayhem but in the thrusting rhythms of the dialogue. |

My husband loves this movie Biker Boyz and couldn't find it in the stores so went online to Wal Mart.com and they had it for a resonable price. Ordered it and my husband has been very pleased with it.

April's cranberry sauce may be canned but the laughter and tears of an affecting, unsentimental coda are real.
Pieces of April has its heart in the right place, and while it may not always be entirely successful, marks a promising debut for a talented filmmaker. |
