Dean Cain, born Dean George Tanaka in 1966, turned down 17 athletic scholarships in favor of studying at Princeton University, where he dated actress Brooke Shields. When he graduated, he joined the Buffalo Bills football team, but he injured his knee in training camp and had to give up his football career. He turned to acting, beginning with commercials for Kellogg's cereals and taking on parts in popular TV series. In 1993, he met with great success as the star of the television production Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, a series that attracted as many as 15 million viewers at its peak.
