A "Library Journal" Best Mystery of 2012
He never wanted to tell Joe Pickett about it, but Nate Romanowski always knew trouble was coming out of his past. Now it's here, and it may not only be the battle of his life-but of Joe's.

In 1995, Nate was in a secret Special Forces unit abroad when a colleague did something terrible. Now high up in the government, the man is determined to eliminate anyone who knows about it, and Nate knows exactly how he'll do it-by striking at Nate's friends to draw him out. The entire Pickett family will be a target, and the only way to fight back is outside the law. Nate knows he can do it, but he isn't sure about his straight-arrow friend-and all their lives could depend on it.

Reviews

Review by Library Journal (2012-08-01)

This latest installment in the Joe Pickett series focuses on his friend and former Special Forces soldier Nate Romanowski. One of Nate's old comrades is now a high government official and wants to make sure that his army buds stay permanently silent about some unsavory incident from years back. Nate must convince Joe of the impending danger. David Chandler's baritone has an easygoing confidence that blends well with the text. He is especially adroit with the narrative portions.

Verdict: With loads of tension, suspense, and more than a couple of deaths, this is an exciting thriller. This series is quite popular, and public libraries should consider purchasing.

Review by Library Journal (2012-03-01)

Set just weeks after fugitive Nate Romanowski's double loss of his lover and a trusted ally (Cold Wind), Nate realizes that his former Air Force mentor is hunting him down and systematically eliminating all his known associates. A bloody confrontation along the Twelve Sleep River injures Nate and sets the tone for a series of violent attacks stretching from Colorado into Wyoming and Idaho. Getting ever closer to Nate's best friends, game warden Joe Pickett and his wife Marybeth, the killer taunts his intended victims. Nate, up against a skilled falconer, expects only the worst outcome, but still he perseveres. And Joe, always honorable, plans to save Nate's life, no matter what it takes.

Verdict: The 12th Joe Pickett novel focuses on the enigmatic Nate, whose story mirrors some of the sweeping changes brought on by 9/11 and the subsequent wars. Edgar-winner Box has written an exquisitely designed, six-act mystery that uses falconry for its central metaphor without ever losing the necessary thrust to make this an absolutely riveting read. This is the best Box I've ever read, and I've read them all. Recommend to fans of Lee Child's The Affair. [See Prepub Alert, 9/19/11.]

Rated 5 out of 5★ by Another great C.J. Box book. My preorder book arrived yesterday several days ahead of schedule. I have read seven chapters already. As always C.J's books are hard to put down. If you like western and mystery read the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box. Like all of the many fans he has I am waiting for the series to be made into movies. 03/24/2012
