Great idea- only as good as the signal it gets I was looking to drop my land line, as it was getting more expensive every month, notably due to taxes and hidden taxes called fees. The drawback to our rural location was the lack of cell signal. We have AT&T for cell service, and never got much signal indoors. I also had a Sprint phone as well as a Boost Mobile (BM) one (works on Sprint's network) to try out with this. My goal was to use the Panasonic link to cell setup on their cordless phones (connects your cell phone to the Panasonic via Bluetooth) and get rid of our land line. To accomplish that, I needed better signal inside the home. A couple days searching online and reading reviews, and I settled on the YX545, which replaced the older YX510.First off, I got 1 day shipping for $9.97. It was ordered online on a Wednesday morning and delivered the next day. Walmart's delivered price was better than any other new unit except Amazon, and that was only with Amazon's free (slow) shipping. I highly recommend Walmart for this item.Our home sits about 25 feet below the grade of the main road in gently rolling terrain. It's a two story with tall attic, probably 35' off the ground. After using a signal strength app on the AT&T Inspire phone, I decided on an attic install. I put the YX545's included antenna at the top of the attic behind a mesh gable vent (the included bracket slid behind the wall material so no screws were needed), and ran the thin cable to the main unit, which I left in the attic. I found I got better performance by leaving the small antenna parallel to the floor. Setup was beyond easy: connect the antennas, and plug in the power supply to the base. I was rewarded with a green light in just a few seconds.I'm not a phone techie, but realize the AT&T is a "GSM" while the other two are "CDMA". The phones used for AT&T were an older Razr V8 and a newer HTC Inspire 4G. The phone used for Sprint was a newer EVO 4G and for Boost Mobile a new Samsung Factor.I never had more than two phones on at a time for this, so as to minimize any signal use, but did try it with all 4 going at once with no real notable difference.The Sprint & BM struggled to get any signal. The EVO did better, getting at times one bar. The BM phone kept going in and out of range. It never showed any bars, at best it was a flat line.The AT&T phones showed a huge improvement. The Razr went from 1 bar to 3 and usually 4. We used it with the Panasonic link to cell and the test call worked great. The Inspire using the app went from a low of around 18% signal to a minimum of 32% and was usually in the 47+% range, even laying on a desk (all tests done on a 2G network). The cell phones were used on the first floor of a 3,000 square foot home. The YX545 main unit was about 20' above them and anywhere from 10~20' horizontal. I did not notice a difference when I tested signal on the second floor, to include directly under the unit.This unit is not an amplifier, it is a repeater. If you have little to no signal (like Sprint here), it won't do you any good. If you have decent signal outside (like AT&T here), it may mean the difference between dropped calls and great ones. If you need an amplifier, look at Wilson and Cyfre. They make decent stuff that may fill the void. 08/11/2011
Great Product I live in an area that has minimal cell coverage. Inside my home I didn't get 1 bar unless I was next to a window. With this signal booster, I can use the phone anywhere in my house and get 3-6 bars. It is so good, my cell phone works better inside than it does outside. Does what it says. I live in the woods, in a house with a metal roof. Had to be near a window in order to have good signal. This product has definitely improved that situation. I can be almost anywhere in the house and get good voice signal now. However, I really needed a boost for my data signal, as I use a smartphone mobile hotspot for Internet access. That was the reason I purchased this signal booster. It does not help that much at all, so that is a big disappointment. Verizon tells me that the data and voice signals are two different networks, so this product does what it says; it is a CELL PHONE SIGNAL BOOSTER, not a data signal booster. 10/02/2011
Worked perfectly for our situation: full bars outside, but 0-1 bars inside our home. After installing the antenna on our roof and running the cable down into the house, we now get full bars in a 3-room area. Coverage is still poor at the far end of the house, but I am perfectly happy with how the product performs. 10/28/2011
