The help database and "find" box aren't as helpful as they should be. Even terms given in the forms, e.g. "third party designee" are apparently unavailable. Help for a particular stated item includes dozens of unrelated items. It isn't always possible to go back to previously asked questions in "step by step", and impossible to navigate backwards through the state return. A link in the state return to the relevant area in the federal return which might need to be accessed would be helpful. Not being able to alphabetize dividends and charities for more than a fleeting moment is a perennial irritation. And finally, although it's fine to be user-friendly, some of the phrasing seems unprofessional, e.g. "Way to go! this deduction saved you a bunch of money!" I guess your software developers are in their 20's, but not all the users are. These are just suggestions for improvements to a basically excellent product. How we ever got along without tax software in the past I have trouble remembering.

Overall a Great Product ! ... I don't think I could do my Taxes without it. ... Or at least be as confident in the results... The major downside this year was that I had some additional tax situations, i.e. sold a second home to a relative, Medical expenses, etc... The Investment Income section did not explain very well how to address the 1099-S I had received, the Sale of a second home to a Related Party, and Establishing a cost Basis. As such I struggled with this. Also, we had some additional Medical Expenses to claim. This section also seemed to need better explanations. Finally, there were some Real Estate Tax deduction items such as Special Assessments that per IRS Publications are NOT to be included even though they are listed on the 1098 Form. I did not recall this being explained very well in the Help info provided by TT... This said, I'd still rate the product a 9 out of 10 ! ... Curious, what happened to the Video Help/Info clips that used to be in the application ?

*Confusing. *Obtuse. *Not proper and indefinite english used - Have an English Ph.D. review each incontext word, sentence, and meaning. *Various review menu searches for previously entered data end at different destinations - Try finding the guided entry for "SSA-1099 Voluntary Federal income tax withheld". *Poor linkage between guided data entered and the associated Federal form entry. *Not thought through - For an incidental instance: "Family Life" does not include "I'm retired". *Poor expression of meaning - For an incidental instance: My nickname is not a "value". Misdirection - For an incidental instance: The phrase "By submitting a review you agree ..." at the bottom of the screen (where I entered this review) should be only on the screen with the SUBMIT button. Misdirection - For an incidental instance: What is the meaning of "Minimum reached" just to the right of this text box? Would "Character count __" and "Characters remaining __" be a better use of the screen space?

I am very thankful for Turbo Tax . My return is very simple as I only have income and the standard deduction to figure. But all the calculations are done for me and that is a comfort that all the numbers are in the right spot. My only problem this year was with the IRA(s) part. Up to that point every time I was asked if this applied - the next page allowed me to input the amounts. But when it came to IRA I was asked if I had taken a RMD. I said yes but the next page asked me if my wife had taken a RMD. I again said Yes and the next page asked me to enter the amount. I did not have a page to enter MY amount. I got on a chat with a person from Turbo Tax and spent an hour with him. He was not able to help me as we never could get him to view my screen. I finally figured it out for myself. This is the first time I've had this problem. Everything else went find. I hope that by next year you fix this so information can be entered right after your customers answer Yes to a question.

I completed a tax preparer's course and certified with Fed and Calif to prepare taxes on another software system. I found TurboTax (TT) really covered all the fine details in an excellent, hand-holding way, providing great detailed tips and help along the way. The only problem I ran into was the feature to flag entries as estimates. I used that for a few entries, then later went back and entered the correct amounts. But TT wouldn't unflag them as estimates no matter what I did. I could mark an entry as not an estimate from the right-click context menu, and it would appear to be done. But when I would run the error check at the end, it would claim they were still estimates. There seemed to be no built-in or on-line help that I could find related to the feature. I solved it by simply deleting the items that I had entered with estimates, then re-entered those from scratch. I've used TT for years for myself, and have the highest regard for it, and I don't hesitate recommending it to anyone.

  • A. You have to buy a new version each year - new tax laws, new forms, etc.

  • A. They say you have to buy a new one each year, I have never tried to use an old one just because so many things change from year to year. But if you keep track of what you spent on the previous years Turbo Tax and any expenses for E-filing you can deduct them. It gives you that option in the deductions.

  • A. You need a new version each year, but it can import the files from last year into the present year, which saves a LOT of time.

  • A. As I understand it, you have a maximum of 5 returns. I've already done 2 this year and am about to start a third. All must be filing in the same state if you are going to file state returns.

  • A. Yes you will only have to buy one TT CD. You will be able E-File 5 Federal returns for free, but will have to pay $20 to E-File each State return. But, you can print out and mail each State Return for free.
