  • A. You have to buy a new version each year - new tax laws, new forms, etc.

  • A. They say you have to buy a new one each year, I have never tried to use an old one just because so many things change from year to year. But if you keep track of what you spent on the previous years Turbo Tax and any expenses for E-filing you can deduct them. It gives you that option in the deductions.

  • A. You need a new version each year, but it can import the files from last year into the present year, which saves a LOT of time.

  • A. As I understand it, you have a maximum of 5 returns. I've already done 2 this year and am about to start a third. All must be filing in the same state if you are going to file state returns.

  • A. Yes you will only have to buy one TT CD. You will be able E-File 5 Federal returns for free, but will have to pay $20 to E-File each State return. But, you can print out and mail each State Return for free.

Minor Adjustments; otherwise Excellent

The help database and "find" box aren't as helpful as they should be. Even terms given in the forms, e.g. "third party designee" are apparently unavailable. Help for a particular stated item includes dozens of unrelated items. It isn't always possible to go back to previously asked questions in "step by step", and impossible to navigate backwards through the state return. A link in the state return to the relevant area in the federal return which might need to be accessed would be helpful. Not being able to alphabetize dividends and charities for more than a fleeting moment is a perennial irritation. And finally, although it's fine to be user-friendly, some of the phrasing seems unprofessional, e.g. "Way to go! this deduction saved you a bunch of money!" I guess your software developers are in their 20's, but not all the users are. These are just suggestions for improvements to a basically excellent product. How we ever got along without tax software in the past I have trouble remembering.

Overall a Great Product ! ... I don't think I could do my Taxes without it. ... Or at least be as confident in the results... The major downside this year was that I had some additional tax situations, i.e. sold a second home to a relative, Medical expenses, etc... The Investment Income section did not explain very well how to address the 1099-S I had received, the Sale of a second home to a Related Party, and Establishing a cost Basis. As such I struggled with this. Also, we had some additional Medical Expenses to claim. This section also seemed to need better explanations. Finally, there were some Real Estate Tax deduction items such as Special Assessments that per IRS Publications are NOT to be included even though they are listed on the 1098 Form. I did not recall this being explained very well in the Help info provided by TT... This said, I'd still rate the product a 9 out of 10 ! ... Curious, what happened to the Video Help/Info clips that used to be in the application ?

*Confusing. *Obtuse. *Not proper and indefinite english used - Have an English Ph.D. review each incontext word, sentence, and meaning. *Various review menu searches for previously entered data end at different destinations - Try finding the guided entry for "SSA-1099 Voluntary Federal income tax withheld". *Poor linkage between guided data entered and the associated Federal form entry. *Not thought through - For an incidental instance: "Family Life" does not include "I'm retired". *Poor expression of meaning - For an incidental instance: My nickname is not a "value". Misdirection - For an incidental instance: The phrase "By submitting a review you agree ..." at the bottom of the screen (where I entered this review) should be only on the screen with the SUBMIT button. Misdirection - For an incidental instance: What is the meaning of "Minimum reached" just to the right of this text box? Would "Character count __" and "Characters remaining __" be a better use of the screen space?

I am very thankful for Turbo Tax . My return is very simple as I only have income and the standard deduction to figure. But all the calculations are done for me and that is a comfort that all the numbers are in the right spot. My only problem this year was with the IRA(s) part. Up to that point every time I was asked if this applied - the next page allowed me to input the amounts. But when it came to IRA I was asked if I had taken a RMD. I said yes but the next page asked me if my wife had taken a RMD. I again said Yes and the next page asked me to enter the amount. I did not have a page to enter MY amount. I got on a chat with a person from Turbo Tax and spent an hour with him. He was not able to help me as we never could get him to view my screen. I finally figured it out for myself. This is the first time I've had this problem. Everything else went find. I hope that by next year you fix this so information can be entered right after your customers answer Yes to a question.

I completed a tax preparer's course and certified with Fed and Calif to prepare taxes on another software system. I found TurboTax (TT) really covered all the fine details in an excellent, hand-holding way, providing great detailed tips and help along the way. The only problem I ran into was the feature to flag entries as estimates. I used that for a few entries, then later went back and entered the correct amounts. But TT wouldn't unflag them as estimates no matter what I did. I could mark an entry as not an estimate from the right-click context menu, and it would appear to be done. But when I would run the error check at the end, it would claim they were still estimates. There seemed to be no built-in or on-line help that I could find related to the feature. I solved it by simply deleting the items that I had entered with estimates, then re-entered those from scratch. I've used TT for years for myself, and have the highest regard for it, and I don't hesitate recommending it to anyone.

The software was straightforward and easy to understand. The only complicated thing is the tax code itself, which often left me shaking my head and swearing under my breath. But TurboTax held my hand through the whole thing and did a good job of offering helpful tips (which deductions and taxes are common and which are not) and the option for more detail when needed. My only complaint is that they see everything as an opportunity to up-sell. Do I want the fancier version for more stock detail? No, I don't. I had a rather confusing stock situation, but I still didn't need the more expensive product. Also, I think it's just silly that they charge extra for more state returns and to e-file your one state return. I want to buy a product that does what I need and to just use it; I don't need to feel like I'm going through an extended pitch for the products I already decided not to buy. But, it was pretty infrequent, and the rest of the experience definitely made up for that minor annoyance.

2010 NOT the Best

We have used TTx for several years and recommended it to many friends, etc. Never had a problem and always been pleased with the application for our uses - until...what happened this year? It was so frustrating to get error messages of failure to install, etc., etc. and to discover there were issues which in our case disabled ability for automatic updates, required manual updating and/or re-downloading, and problems doing e-file. No one actually provided a reason for these issues this year although I spoke at length w/support on 2 occasions. Rather than belabor the frustrations (they seem to be well documented in the "Community" section from other users as well), I think the biggest failure was not to have some sort of advance notice or warning about the issues and perhaps an explanation and redirect help as to what to do next - an email blast? It would have saved a lot of time, frustration, and would have mitigated what was our first dissatisfaction that we've ever had with the product.

As both an engineer and program manager for the US Army, I see software programs of all types and complexities at all levels of users, both novice and expert. As such, I have to say that if all software programs ran as simply, consistently and as easily as Turbo Tax does from year to year, the world would be a far easier place to live in! The logic in the way data is laid out is almost without fault, although I think the Step Through process for the Income and Deductions sections could still be a little bit easier to navigate for the sections that don't apply. There should be a way to go through all and be able to quickly tell Turbo Tax that Section does not apply. Recommend putting a master table of ALL Income and Deduction Types at the beginning of each section and then let the user determine which sections he wishes to select by marking buttons accordingly. Other than that, it's a super program and give it a 10 out of 10 as a product that is consistently worth its cost, and then some.

I was struggling with my Oregon state return on the Turbotax internet site. My military retired pay was entered twice and I was unable to remove one of the entries. I called for support and was on the phone with Barbara (she claimed she was in Florida). She spent the better part of three hours trying to fix this problem. She was patient and never got flustered. I never got the impression she was in a hurry to get rid of me. Although she was never able to directly fix the problem, she downloaded a desktop version of Turbotax and had me redo my taxes on that program with no problem. A second issue came up when I attempted to e-file. I was charged twice for the same service. Once again I called support and was put on the phone with Nichole. She was also patient and provided me the service to get one of the charges removed. It was unfortunate that the online software took off in some direction that even the technicians could not figure out. But, the Turbotax support personnel were great.

Our family of 4 has tons of deductions to keep track of. So throughout the year I put them in five folders as they come in. Each of us has our own medical folder as we have spent over $10K depending on the year. In the other folder I place tax bills and other receipts like donations throughout the year. When we donate goods, we itemize what we donate and put the lists into that 5th folder. By January 31st, we have our W-2s, interest statements, and 1099s in hand. Without fuss, we do a couple of simple calculations and jump to Turbo Tax. A little while later, the Taxes are done and my wife is already planning on what she'll buy with our Refund. You probably think it doesn't seen fair that I do the taxes and she spends the refund, but she does babysit the kids so I can get all the credit for doing the taxes. Turbo Tax deserves the credit, but let's just keep that our little secret. Buy it. The first year you use it, it will take some time. But the time will pay off every year afterward.
