This is a good and inexpensive timer you can use indoors or out. Easy to program. I have 2 of them outdoors controlling things I want to operate in the daytime and the other operate in the night.

We needed a heavy duty outdoor timer for our water fountain. I went to homedepot and lowes and was very disappointed with the selection at the stores. Went online and checked out several websites including homedepot and lowes and what they offered was not what I was looking for. Saw this timer at walmart and it appeared to be exactly what I was looking for. Plus the price was unbeatable. ( I shop at walmart all the time because they have such great pricing). I had checked in the store but they didn't have this item or anything that would have worked for me. I ordered it and had it shipped to the store so I wouldn't have to pay shipping. So far, it's been about 3 weeks since I've installed it and its working exactly as it should.

I need the timer to operate so that my chickens will have longer day light hours during the winter months in order that the chickens might lay eggs.

    • You program this by pushing down or leaving up timing pins which represent 1/2 hour each pin. This is not precise timing but good enough for most needs. Loss of power will move the timing back equal to the time power is off for short intervals. This would work ok for your application but power outages will be a problem. It is a low cost and simple way to do this task.

    • Absolutely! That's the beauty of a mechanical timer...it's like one you might use indoors on your lamps. There's a 24-hour dial, and you push the tabs down for the hours you want power on, and leave them up for the hours you want it shut off. There's a switch just below the dial that allows for "always on" or to use your settings.

    • This timer is great for outdoor uses. Start with all of the black segment pins pulled upwards. Then push down every segment between the light shaded 5am and green shaded 7pm - the time you want your lights to be on. Line up the little green arrow labeled "time now' to the time it is and plug in your lights. If you have any challenges or trouble setting it -you can call our consumer service number on the packaging and a member of our team can walk you through setting it. Be sure that the combined wattage of the lights being operated by the time does not exceed 1000 watts. That's the capacity of the timer for lighting. Exceeding that could damage the timer, your lights or your building.

What does CFL/LED mean? There is a symbal at the bottom of the dial on the left with a switch and if you push the switch to the right there is a "L". What does the switch do?
    by Shirley 12/19/2013
    • CFL compact fluorescent lamp, LED light emitting diode. Basically it is ok to use with any kind of lamps. I think the switch can turn it on or off manually bypassing the timer.

    • The switch on mine is simply for "on" or "automatic", meaning power "always on" or "on as programmed." I don't remember the CFL/LED on the package, but I do know not all timers (especially older ones) are compatible with CFLs, so this is probably touting a benefit of this particular timer.

    • The CFL/LED marking means that this timer is compatible with the new CFL (compact flourscent/spiral style) and LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. Not all timers are compatible with those newer types of bulbs. The "L" icon is actually the capitol "i" and is the universal symbol that the outlet is overriding the timer settings. For example - if it was an especially overcast day and you wanted to turn the outside lights on that are plugged into this timer you could move that switch and the lights would come on earlier. You would also need to turn it back to the clock icon to resume normal timer functions.
