In this fine book collecting the first seven issues of the latest Captain America series, long-time villain Red Skull resurfaces with a plan to bomb major cities and use the energy created by the destruction to power a new reality-altering Cosmic Cube. But the plan goes awry when the Skull is killed and the Cube stolen. While Captain investigates with the help of Sharon Carter-his ex-girlfriend, now his liaison with U.N. peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D.-and S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury, he has visions of the past that may be repressed memories coming to light, or false memories planted using the Cube.
The excellent, dark-edged action thriller script by Brubaker, an Eisner and Harvey Award nominee for work on DC's Batman titles, makes good use of Captain America's established history while adding intelligent modifications to it. Epting's (El Cazador) artwork is strongly realistic; World War II flashback sequences, drawn by Michael Lark, are effectively presented in black and white. The story continues in Volume 2. Strongly recommended for all teen and adult superhero fans.
