Hook plastic tab over a hook some distance away from the reel. Then, wrap the line back around the circular disk on the bottom of the reel, tightening the line and feeding any excess back into the reel.

Unwrap the line from around the spool on the bottom of the reel and then pull the line tight with your hand towards the spool and hold it tight while rewrapping the line around the spool. The spool rewind spring should take up any slack between the spool and the reel.

Take the hook out of the eye on the wall, unwind the other end from the round holder on the bottom of the unit. Then re-attach the hook to the eye on the wall, pull the line tight and rewind the line several times onto the bottom of the unit..

If you have the same one, at the bottom of the mount, you should see a little circle that looks like a "pulley" on it's side. Once you hook the end of the line, go back to the mount, pull the line tight and wrap it around the "pulley". It holds tightly with little sagging. I have attached a picture from the box to show you how it holds the line secure.

It doesn't lock into place, so u have to connect a loop screw to another item to keep the line up.

The instructions included no mention of how to tighten it for use either- crazy of them! Anyway here ya go: after hanging the hook at the end of the line at it's destination, wrap the part of the line that is comign out of the dispencer around the circle underneath the dispencer, that'll make the line secure.

There's a round plastic piece atttached to the bottome of the bracket. Measure out how much line you need (give a few inches) then without pulling more out wrap the line (from where it comes out of the spool) around the round plastic piece once. This will lock it into place.

Is the cord pulled out? If it is, then you just remove it from where the end is stretched and hooked to, and make sure it isn't wrapped around the base (which is set so you can wrap the cord around it) then once the cord is totally free back to the hole it comes out of, it should retract back into the big circular line holder if itis working.

There should be a small ring where the unit can be turned, it's under/behind where it tubing comes out. I wrap the tubing around to tighten directly where it comes out. You put the end to ring wherever that is placed, then take a little extra out and wrap that around the ring to secure it. It took me a min or two to figure it out the first time.

Unwrap the cord from the circular then tighten up and rewrap around circular part.

I have it mounted between two trees
Works fine

It should work fine mounted between two trees. I have my unit installed in my garage between the front and back walls (approximately 25 feet) and it is really a help in reducing my gas dryer usage. However, I have had problems in the past with failure of the plastic mounting bracket and/or line when hanging very heavy loads so don't overdo it.

It does work well. Thats how we have ours to use for towels and bathing suits by the pool.

I'm going to take Maggie's advice and just buy a clothesline and two hooks. The reviews I've read on all these retractible clothes lines indicate they all sag pretty bad and aren't efficient with jeans, towels or other heavy items.

It can be attached to two trees, however I wouldn't use it for Carharts. It works great for beach towels.

Would need to install using longer screws than what is provided with product.

I don't know an exact amount - but I have put quite a bit of weight on it. It depends on the wall you have the hook screwed in to - needs to be a stud - not just wall board.

We have put two wet bed spreads on it, it sags a little but have never had it break. We have used one for over 20 yrs

I hang a full load of jeans or towels at a time.

I use this for clothes that shouldn&#39;t be dried in a dryer so I don&#39;t have an exact weight.  But I&#39;ve hung at least 10 shirts (on hangers), shorts, and undergarments at the same time.  I often hang wet towels after a day at the beach or pool.  We posted it to two walls.  Not sure about two trees.  I would recommend using basic clothes line string for that.  You can purchase that at a hardware store.

This is my second one, and this one is improved. We put it in the kitchen by the back door (above and to the side of the hinges) and stretch it diagonally across the kitchen over the table as much out of the way as possible from our paths to sink and fridge. The dryer use is much less for having it.

As per directions: Don't let go of the cord and let the line retract by flying back on its own, for that can "backlash" and tangle the cord. That ruined my first one, fun as it was to do. The first line lasted six or so years.

green & cheap way to save on the power bill

Love the retractable clothes line.  We installed it in the garage and now can drip dry our pool togs without clogging up the bathroom.  It's great that it can be retracted when not in use.  LOVE IT!

Great idea

We've been using a retractable clothes line for years, but they have always been light and flimsy and  last only a year at best. Therefore, we researched to find this one to be the most heavy duty. We also found it at Walmart for half the price at Lowes!

Best one yet

This old fashioned product is perfect for small space and no extensive construction.
It arrived early and in perfect condition.

I had a similar one of these years ago & I moved & every spring I thought I would get another one. Now I wonder why I waited so long. This took minutes to install. I hung my bedspread on it today after washing it. So much more economical than the dryer. I hung rugs & towels on it the other day. It will more than pay for itself in no time!

I purchased this clothesline because I didn't have anywhere to put a regular clothesline. This gives me the opportunity to hang clothes outside, (I love the smell of clothes dried outside) and save on my electric bill. The line is sturdy and 40 feet long and holds a whole load of washing. I also like that I am able to hide the line when it is not in use. The delivery of the item was quick. I ordered it on Monday (I think) and picked it up at site to store on Thursday, although it wasn't due to be in until the following week. Thank you Wal-Mart for carrying this product.

Love It!

I have had one of these for 14 years - but the base broke. I found the same one - only better at Walmart - now the part that broke after 14 years is made of metal, not plastic. I didn't even have to move any of the screws I had in the wall to install the new one. I am expecting it to be the last one I ever need to buy. and we use a great deal for sports uniforms and other things that don't dry in the dryer!

Great Clothes Line

This is the second retractable clothes line I've purchased from Walmart, only because we've lost our first one during our last PSC move.  Our first retractable line has lasted through four moves (domestic and international).  It does the job at a very low cost.  I would definitely recommend it.

Does the job for a low price

this does what it's supposed to do with no problems. i just wish the bracket was made of metal, not plastic. to make it stronger, i used washers over the installation screws to spread out the stress on the plastic bracket. we'll see how this works!

almost perfect!

It's great and just what I needed but there's no way to make it stop where you want. I put up the holding screw and went to hang my sheets and everything fell to the ground. I didn't realize you have to have the hanger pulled out to the max. That means I'll have to find another place to put the holding screw and u don't have many options. May have to return it for that reason. Otherwise I like the way the product is made.!

Not what I thought

I bought this 2 or 3 years ago to hang wet washing out in the summer sun & breezes. My favorite household task. It is mounted on a post especially erected for in in a corner of the patio, the other end fastened in a big hook screwed into a tree at the other corner.   Today as I hung out my batch of white wash, it broke & all the white things fell on the ground. The plastic case was not strong enough where it fastens onto the post. I'd like to see it reinforced so this doesn't happen to others. Or to me again !
