Tent BY ITSELF can rollup into a roughly 4" diameter by 8" roll. The shockcords sections are rather long, greater than 18". I had to velcro them to the frame on bike or on my rack. I bagged the stakes separate to make everything easier to stow on my bike panniers.

The bag for the tent in about 24"x6"x6". The long pole disassembles to about 22" and the short pole around 18". The tent itself can be packed pretty tightly, small enough that the bag is way too big for it. I would guess that I rolled mine about 18" long with a diameter of 5".

tent rolls up to the size of a loaf of bread, and the poles fold down to 22 inches.

What is the sized of this tent while rolled up in the stuff sack?

I had the tent in a light downpour, and not a drop of water found its way inside. However, I don't think that would be the case with a heavier shower. The floor is not "bathtub style" and does not come up the walls any, meaning that water on the ground could leak in. The seams could also use some sealing, as they could on almost any tent. Get some seam sealer and waterproofing treatment for any tent you buy.

the tent has a plastic coating and is technically "waterproof" In fact, you must have vents open to prevent condensation (your exhalation) inside. I could not tension the tent sufficiently to keep a driving rain from potentially causing the tent to sag I consider it a fair weather tent

It will withstand a light drizzle but not full rain, you'll get dripped on. drape a 6x8 tarp over the top and you got a rain fly though...

I don't know about rainproof, but my tent has held up against hard rain for the first three or four times I've used it. This was without seam sealer.

Moisture proof and rain resistant. After buying this I used a can of water repellant on it. Since it is a smaller tent, I always keep a large tarp to drape over it just incase it rains.

Tent is light, folds up real nice and small, easy to setup and just right for a normal size guy backpacking or bicycle touring / camping a few times a year. Is it the tent to take on your 36 month bike tour or on your epic hike up Mt McKinley? Probably not. But it IS perfect for those of us with jobs and families that can only get away a few times a year and cannot afford the $300 price tag of the really " great " tents. As I would recommend on any tent, use seam sealer and spray with KIWI Camp Dry before using. For the price, size, wt and ease of use I rated this a 5 out of 5.

Great tent for it's price range.

I purchased this tent because of it's light weight and recommendation for bicycling and hiking. I go on short 2-4 day rides and this tent is perfect for my overnight stops. It sets up quickly and easily and fits perfectly over my pannier packs on my bicycle rack.

Met expectations

It rained the first three nights in this tent when I camped while moving across the country.Sometimes hard. Couldn't find my seam sealer for sealing stitching areas. Didn't matter. Only had some very manageable drops of water. Tent sets up easily and has lots of room for gear.

A good tent

I ordered the Lone Elk a week ago for kayaking. Size is important, because not just anything will fit in the kayak's storage compartment. I decided to take it for a test run in the backyard prior to heading out in the kayak.

I picked a good night, because we had some light rainfall. During daylight, I could see pinpricks of sunlight coming in on the far forward and rearward end seams from where the stitching had been done. I figured I was going to wake up damp, but to my surprise, not a drop of water found its way inside. Nevertheless, I doubt the tent would fare as well in a storm or heavy rain, and I'd recommend buying some seam sealer. The fabric of the tent allowed absolutely no rain through, but that again may be different in a heavier downpour. Best to treat it with some waterproofer, which I will do before I do any serious camping.

The tent is surprisingly roomy for it's small size and weight. It's every inch as big as it says it is, and at 6'0", I was able to fully stretch out and spread my elbows with my hands under my head without touching any wall. Had a full queen-size pillow that had room to spare, and the clothes and minimal gear that I had brought into the tent with me. You could cram two people in it with no gear, if they wanted to be very, very cozy. I wouldn't recommend it, though, and at $24...just get a second one for your companion.

Set-up and breakdown was quick and intuitive--no instructions needed, though they are stitched to the inside of the tent's carry bag. The braided nylon guy ropes and plastic stays do a more than adequate job of keeping things where they should be. I like that there are two at the front of the tent, so the door isn't bisected by the guy ropes. The stakes could use some upgrading, however. The four corner stakes are the standard flimsy steel (no trouble in my soft backyard, but still), while the three for the guy ropes are sturdier plastic. An investment in a couple of packs of stronger stakes would be wise in case of rocky or hard-packed turf.

High winds would not be the ideal situation for this (or any) tent, but it did much better than I expected. Normally, I would face the head or foot of the tent into the wind, but there wasn't any when I set up. Moderate wind later picked up from the side, but the round shape of the tent flexed with the wind, and there were no annoying flapping sounds. Notably, the tent did not flex so much as to slap me with the fabric walls while I was asleep. I have been woken up many times by noise and tent slap in A-frame tents, and this design is markedly better in my opinion. I recommend the Lone Elk over the Starlite for this reason.

A few improvemets that I'd like to see: The stitching isn't as quality as it could be. Everything was sewn flawlessly, but the stitches are very large--perhaps four stitches per inch. If a thread should pop, that seam is going to unravel in the blink of an eye. Fortunately, everything is double stitched, but I still feel they skimped a bit in this area.

Secondly, the floor of the tent is not "bathtub style," meaning that the tarp material of the floor does not extend up the bottom of the walls at all. This invites water to leak in from the bottom during a rainstorm. Again, no water entered my tent, but I'm going to liberally apply some seam sealer up the walls a bit just to be safe.

Lastly, the zippers have "jingle free" zipper pulls on them...but the zippers themselves are metal! The jingling from the wind did not keep me awake, but it was definitely present. Easy fix for the buyer: just wrap a layer of electrical tape around the zipper tabs to silence them.

Despite the modest drawbacks, this is an outstanding tent, especially for the price. Making all my recommended upgrades will still put you well shy of the price of a more expensive tent, and you'll probably be better equipped at that point, anyway.

Great tent at a great price

great product, and even though there were 3 inches of water outside my tent, everything inside stayed dry!! the only thing i didnt like was that you HAVE to steak the tent for it to stay up. i could only steak the front, and had to push my suitcase as far back in the tent to keep it taught. annoying to change clothes in, etc. but great if the sole purpose is to sleep and keep dry =)

bang for your buck

Wonderful product that is easy to setup and tear down, durable and overall a great find! I used water sealant on mine to double the rain guard. The only warning I will give is this.... it can get stuffy in the tent due to the way it is designed and I use it as a one person tent BUT 100% worth the money and a great purchase.

Exceeds Expectations!

Great tent. no rain-fly but doesnt seem to matter. used it for a few nights on a bike trip. 2nd night it withheld a thunderstorm for hours. i set it up in the rain quickly and it successfully kept rain out for hours. not a drop inside! cant wait to get more use out of this tent!

GREAT TENT!

I bought this for my bf (6'1) and I (5'2) because I read somewhere online that it fits 1-2 people. We're both skinny and we can cuddle so I figured it's no problem. However the space inside was so small that 2 is a crowd. We took turns changing. My bf kept complaining that he had trouble changing b/c he couldn't sit or stand up. As for me, I was ok because I can sit up and change. The tent was easy to assemble and lightweight. Prolly less than 2lbs. I hate that the strings for the top part are in the front, so I keep tripping on them. We ended up returning it.

This is a decent tent but def not for 2 people. It's like a tunnel where you'd have to crawl into sleep. I think it's ok. My bf doesn't like it at all. We camped in the desert, luckily there's no wind or rain. I wouldn't rate this low just because it says on the box that it's for 1 person. Decent price and u get what u pay for.

Easy to assemble, lightweight, but small

Wenzel Outdoor Products has recently made a change in their product line, replacing their Starlite model with the Lone Elk Hiker/Biker tent. The tents in this range are lightweight, and compact for hiking or cycling. Will this transition in products show improvement?

The new Lone Elk tent is one of the lightest tents in its pricepoint, and rivals other more expensive tents in features. In fact, at 1470g (3.25lbs), this tent is ideal for cyclocamping, s240′s, or weekend backpacking… as long as the weather is fair.

Wenzel Lone Elk Hiker/Biker Tent

The tweaked design of the Lone Elk has increased weight by four ounces, but has also included an additional bit of length and width for added comfort. While these attributes are key, a tent needs to be durable too. Keep on reading, in order to see how it stood up to its predecessor.

Once again, this tent is not a self-standing structure. The two shockcorded fiberglass poles are easily guided through the tent supports and mount to the base with a pin and ring system. Three guy lines are used to allow the tent to stand. A complaint of the Starlite tent was that the guyline setup made entering the tent less than optimal for taller or larger users, this tent allows easy entrance without complications.

The tent itself comprises of three different materials, not including the mesh vents. The top part of the dome is a thin, grey nylon which does well at keeping heat in, and blocking wind. The seams are in places which are at optimal angles in the event of rainfall. The second material is a thicker batch of nylon, and lends itself to maintaining the support and tension of the tent. The tarp material used at the base of the tent is thin, but clearly waterproof. I still use a footprint under the tent to keep another layer between the ground and I; this may not be necessary depending on what kind of pad you use under your sleeping bag.

Inside the rear of the tent, there is a vent flap which can be zipped open or closed. The three nights that I spent in the tent for testing, I noticed with both the rear vent flap and front door vent (front only slightly open) open, condensation did accumulate, and took about two hours to evaporate after awakening. I attribute this to the nature of sleeping in a backpacking tent, not a flaw in design or architecture of the vents. The tent kept me considerably warm, and did everything else it was intended for.

Review:

This tent is 3lb4oz, and can be found for $20-25 online. It fits one person, and a backpack inside, and has a small vestibule-type overhang for a pack or shoes at the rear. It does not have a rain fly, therefore is solely meant for fair weather conditions. Tent setup takes ten minutes when done casually, and is quite sturdy with the design.

Pros:

Cons:

* Lack of true Vestibule, Porch, or Rainfly.
* Tent Pole Length of 23″ makes them awkward,
but not difficult to pack.

Once again, if you are not in the market for a $200 tent, this will do you well as long as you understand and accept its limitations. Since February, I have spent five nights in this tent provided to me by Wenzel since February, in weathers as cold as 20*F, and even bailed out on a sixth night that a thunderstorm sneak attacked me. As stated before, this is an ideal cyclocamping or backpacking tent for people who are already light in the wallet. The Lone Elk tent fills a very important role/genre in the area for people who are not yet willing to invest big money in camping gear, but still want to get their feet wet, figuratively… not literally.

Great for fair weather

I purchased this tent online with free shipping it really is a great deal. Light and easy to set up. The carrying case that it comes in has plenty of room to put a ground cover and rain fly in with it as well as a bottle of seam sealer. I'm about 6' tall and it is a perfect fit. I would not recommend anyone taller than 6'. I'd say it could easily fit two people if they are okay with being close. The only downside is that it doesn't come with a rain fly which based on the design and construction I think it would be easy for wenzel to include one. I plan to make my own out of tent material from the fabric store. I had to apply seam sealer when I got it and had it out in a really heavy rain storm one night. It held out the water fairly well, but eventually it got in. For drying I recommend using a window fan with the door open. It will inflate the tent and dry in a short amount of time.

Great tent for the cost. I recommend it!

Great for the money

When looking at the picture, it was not obvious to me that the tent tapers towards the back. I question why the manufacturer made such a design for an adult tent. With out a center rod between the front loop and the back loop, this tent must be staked in the ground to function.

Advancements in tent design have come a long way except in regards to the pup tent style which has not changed much.
For the money I would buy a different design
