Being a mechanical engineer myself, I thought about building my own child seat for my MTB but decided to see what was already available on the market. After settling on the WeeRide, here is my take on the product. The product works well on larger frame bikes (19" - 21") and not so well on small frames (15"-17"). We have a 17" and a 20" MTBs. I am just under 5'11" and ride the 20" bike. My wife is 5'8" and she rides our 17" bike. Depending on the rider's leg length, some taller rider will have to adjust his posture/ergo when pedaling. Mounting the WeeRide on my 20" vintage 1998 Mongoose frame was not straight forward. Many older bikes have brake and shifter cables running along the top side of the toptube while on newer bikes the cables run under the toptube. The mounting bracket that comes with the WeeRide may interfere and pinch the cables on the toptube if not installed and inspected properly. Another challenge is if your bike is like mine which has minimum height on the headtube then the mounting bracket may not secure on your bike. I had to install the bracket attaching slightly high on the seat post and low on the headtube to "wedge" the mounting bracket with caution not to pin the headset and prevent the steerer tube from turning. I placed a bubble level on the mounting bracket after installing to verify the angle as this will affect how much the child seat will lean forward. Mounting the bracket on our 2002 17" Specialized frame was straight forward. Plenty of clearance on the headtop and cable ran under the toptube. Although the spec recommends a max weight of 45-50 lbs, what is more important (IMO) is the combined size and height of your child. My daughter just turned 2-yrs old (~30 lbs) and my son just turned 4-yrs old (~45 lbs). Both are above 90% in height for their age. Here are some considerations if you have tall toddlers. 1. The carrier has an adjustable foot rest for your child's feet. However, the length of adjustment is very limited. For longer leg child, they will ride with legs bent for the duration of the ride. This will create discomfort in their knees. My son complained of stiff knees after an hour of riding. I modified the foot rest by adding thick cushion over the edge of the foot rest and allowed my son to extend his legs out and rest over the cushion. There is risk of your child wanting to stick his shoes into the wheel spoke (as mine did as a game to make noise) but after explaining the danger of doing that to him it became a non issue. 2. The foot rest requires your child's feet to fit entirely inside the rectangular "cup-like" rest. However, the size is very small and does not work well with feet plus shoes. Your child may feel discomfort from wedged in toes. 3. The child seat is mounted to the mounting bracket using a simple threaded knob screw. You tighten by hand using the knob or using an Allen key. Once installed the seat cushion covers the protruding knob. This did not work well as some children may actually feel the protrusion of the knob when fully seated on the seat. This was the situation with my son. He complained that is private was hurting from the knob poking him. I modified the seat by adding another laver of cushion over the knob to level the seating plane and minimize the protrusion. 4. Depending on your bike size, your body geometry, and carrier setup and ergonomics you may feel discomfort in the back of your neck after long rides. Because my son is relatively tall and my bike is setup for aggressive riding with the low headtube and stem, my geometry is a bit leaning forward. This tends to lean me into my son's head/helmet and pushes him forward. He complains that I am pushing his head down while I complain that I am feeling a stiff neck holding up my head for a long period of time. On a bike with a more upright geometry, this should be less of a problem. 5. The carrier sits between your seat and the handlebar. Depending on your bike size, there may not be much room for you to pedal without your legs interfering with the back of the child's seat. This forces you to change your pedaling ergonomics and requires adjustment to your geometry. With the 17" bike, even with the seat adjusted fully back and away from the handlebar, my wife's knee would still hit up against the child seat. As I observed her riding from behind, her knees flare out too wide this could mean joint injuries over the course of time. On my 20" bike, I have clearance for my knees but as mentioned before the wider separation requires me to reach out further to the handlebar, putting strain on my neck. Having said all of this, we still continue to use the WeeRide but are mindful of the limitations and try to limit the duration of our ride. The kids love to go riding and until I can design my own, the WeeRide does the job even with limitations. Good luck and hope this helps you.

I bought this last night and used it for the first time with my little girl. She's not quite one yet, but she's big enough that I knew she would ride well in it. I was correct! She loved the ride and "talked" the entire time! First off, to negate some of the bad reviews: -"You can't use this carrier if you have a mountain bike" - wrong. I have a Huffy 26" woman's mountain bike and this carrier fit on it perfectly -"It's too small to fit a 4-year old" - I would agree that the seat is small, but it's not supposed to be a full-sized seat. Specifically, the *back* of the seat is small. The seat itself has plenty of room for a kid up to 4, assuming they're not over 40 pounds. Pros: - Easy to install - I was done installing this in less than 20 minutes. The directions were clear and concise and all screws & parts were inside, including the tools needed. - Easy to ride with - I saw a lot of reviews that said you have to ride "bow-legged," which is true to an extent. I didn't find it bothersome, but I'm 5'2" so I can't say it wouldn't be an issue with someone who has longer legs. - Fits snugly on the bike - I was extra precise with making sure the screws were as tight as they could be, but regardless this thing isn't going anywhere. It felt completely secure throughout the entire ride. - Baby fits easily in it - My daughter is just over 9 months old but is in the 99th percentile for her class, so she fit perfectly in this! She seemed to know exactly where to set her feet and seemed to think she was a pretty big deal, getting to ride on a bike! - Durable - it's not the prettiest piece of equipment, but it seems very durable and I think it will do well in weather-related conditions (our bikes stay locked up outside). The fabric on the seat seems weather-resistant and durable. - Good value for the money - I was just more comfortable with the idea of having my daughter in front of me, rather than behind. And I think she felt better about the whole situation too. It was almost like I got to hug her the entire ride! The rear-sitting seats were close to $40, so spending the extra $20 on this one, especially after reading the great reviews, seemed like a no-brainer. Cons: - Turning - I honestly think this will just take practice, but turning corners (like on a sidewalk) made me very nervous. I stopped almost at every corner and slowly made my way around it (I'm sure that was entertaining for others to see!). After a few rides and getting more comfortable with the way your bike rides with another human on it, I think this will get easier. - Straps - The straps were a little big on my daughter, but I think that's just because she's not quite to the age they recommend this with. I will fix it temporarily. Overall I loved this seat! I felt 100% comfortable having my daughter ride in it and I love the fact that I can bring her on bike rides now!

The seat does look like it's made for a doll but my 30lb son who's very round fit in it.(barley) but hey I'm not exactly riding on pillows either, you need a mirror to see what they are doing but it's absolutely wonderful having him right in front of me to talk to and if he looks up he can see my face, i love this product! You do have to pedal wider than usual but it's so worth it! I can't wait to ride him around this summer. Oh and the assembly did take a little modification as my bike was not a straight bar, and if they fall asleep it's very difficult to continue riding, I'm thinking a stap might help that just for when he falls asleep so he doesn't sway and scare mom to death! Lol other than that this is perfect!

Easy to follow assembly instructions, soft padding for child, not in the way when peddling. At first glance it looks like it's made for a doll and child wouldn't fit, but child fits comfortably. The only problem I have are with the foot rests. They adjust up and down but not frontward and even at its lowest setting my son seems to not like his knees being so bent since he keeps taking his feet out the rests to stretch them out. Other than that, we like it very much.

I love to go on bike rides with my 2 older boys but couldn't often because I also have a 1 yr old who obviously cannot ride a bike. I read the reviews before buying and have to say I was concerned because a lot of people were saying about their knees hitting the seat. I figured if I had trouble I would just return it. I would NEVER return this. I am only 5'3'' and I have no trouble with my legs hitting the seat and I can reach around my son with no trouble. I love this and now we can all ride together. My son really enjoys riding and thinks he is steering the bike. We have so much fun. The product went together very easily even on my mountain bike and comes with the tools you will need. No regrets here and we ride almost every day.

    • A. yes, highly likely but does depend on your bike. The larger frame bikes (19"-21") have more distance between the handlebar and the seat giving your knees more room.
