    • A. I used one of the Walmart deep cycle marine batteries. I am told it is best to get the most expensive one, but the one I purchased was about $70. So far it works great.

    • A. What size battery you want to get depends on how long you want it to last & what power you're using. If you expect to run a motor like this one at max power ~50 amp draw for 1 hour, you need a "50 amp/hour" rating, or for 2 hours you'd need "100 amp/hour" rating, etc. If you only run it at 1/2 power ~25 amp draw, you only need "25 amp hour" for 1 hour, etc. Another rating for batteries is a "Reserve capasity". If a battery has a RC 120, that means it will last the "120" minutes with a 25 amp draw on the battery. I have a battery that is labeled "120RC" and "55AH" showing both of those ratings, but sometimes a battery may only have 1 of those ratings. Otherwise as others have said, you want a "Deep cycle" one for this purpose since it will be heavily drained while used, then recharged, & shows how the "deep cycle" name came about. Also FYI, keeping the battery fully charged 99% of the time will make it last the longest, so always recharge ASAP after the use, don't wait until you want to use it again and say "why won't it hold a charge". If a battery is left over 1/2 drained, it loses ~1% of it's life per day.

    • A. Any deep cycle battery. The greater the reserve hour, the better. Any auto parts or retailer of batteries can provide you what you need to know for the battery. The reason you don't want a regular auto battery is that the battery will be discharged and then recharged. This deep discharging and repeated charging can warp the plates in an auto battery. Deep cycle batteries are built for this, thus my recommendation.

    • A. It just depends how much you use the trolling motor. I recommend a 12 volt deep cycle battery with the maximum amperage capicity.

What is the advantage of 5 speeds over variable? I am assuming variable lets you change the speed by turning something.
    by deever 5/29/2011

    • A. if i am correct a variable speed is a handle that just slowly rotates instead of rotating into a slot and locking into a speed... and this is ok in fresh water i use it in only fresh water it is just a saltwater edition because of the non corrosive coating that is put on it

    • A. Yes this is a good unit for fresh water, as slat water trolling motors are sealed better in order to protect aginst corrosive/damaging salt

    • A. Yes for fresh water. Variable vs. 5 speed usually means a different circuitry that conserves battery life vs. more power used. I am not positive on this model as some of the other manufacturers have the newer technology for extending battery life with lower power consumption. Expect to pay big $$$ for this feature. If a motor is a true variable speed motor, it is simply a variable resistor that allows you to gradually increase/decrease power by twisting the throttle grip. A 5 speed has detents for those preselected power settings. I find the five speeds to be quite adequate.

Great trolling motor for the price. I have had it for over a year and have had no problems. I had a little trouble flipping the handle around to fit on the front of my boat. The design for flipping the head could of been a little more user friendly considering a lot of people a putting these on the front of their boats. Other than that is has been a durable trouble free trolling motor. The shipping was horrible though. The box showed up busted. The lower unit was scratched which was not a very big deal for me considering I camo’d it right out the box to put it on my duck boat.

I looked at several different trolling motors and settled on this one for my needs. I figured why spend more money for a big name trolling motor when they all last around 2 years in saltwater. It pushes a 19.5' Carolina Skiff (semi-v) for floundering. I thought it might be too small, but it pushes the boat in the shallows just fine. It operates smoothly and efficiently. No wierd noises. The controls operate smoothly. I haven't run it an extended time to determine if it burns through battery life yet. So far, so good. I bought the extended warranty through Walmart for $30 giving it a three year warranty. Unheard of for a saltwater trolling motor. The only negative is the anti-chafe material on the shaft where it slides up and down wouldn't stay put. A little adhesive on the backside and it is good to go. Decent motor with great price point.

I saw the price and figured Id chance not going with one of the top brands like minn or riptide but this is surprised me and works 100% to my expectations. I use this on a small john boat and gets me along quite well.

Ordered online, arrived on time. Easy directions. Works great, lower battery draw than I thought. 1st trip out my outboard motor died and thanks to the Watersnake I fished all day and made it into dock without needing a tow. I use it on my 20' deep bow boat and it works quite and smooth.
