Movie Description

The following content was provided by the publisher.

When disaster strikes in America, heroes rush in. We've seen it time and time again: when all seems lost, real-life supermen (and women) step up to save the day. But what if, right now, there is a hidden catastrophe spreading quietly, insidiously through our nation's cities, towns and communities - and yet we have the power to stop it? What if our children and their futures - were in peril? Who will become a hero now? From Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Award(R)-winning director of "An Inconvenient Truth", comes another stirring, must-see clarion call of our times: "Waiting for 'Superman'", a deeply personal exploration of the current state of public education in the U.S. and how it is affecting our children. Fueled by his conscience and electrified by the possibilities for change, Guggenheim sets off on a probing journey into the lives of five unforgettable kids whose dreams, hopes and untapped potential reveal all that is at stake at this critical moment. In addressing questions through dynamic storytelling, Guggenheim sparks a vital national conversation and introduces us to a group of education reformers currently defying the odds. But when the credits roll, the story hasn't ended. It has only just begun - because what Guggenheim reveals is that the superheroes we've been waiting for to save our schools are all around us. In fact, they might just be me and you.

Rated 5 out of 5★ by 5reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Children R Our Future We must from the family, school, and community put the welfare of our children as a priority! Technology has its place but we need the "brain" muscles more than the "finger" muscles of our children used more. I'm a National Board Certified Teacher and its sad to work with students who's family will spend more on shoes, clothes and technology over the basic - BOOKS. I use modern technology in my class but we still must be able to read with comprehension for application in "real life" situations. When we ask students to read its often resisted because so many can only read at a 4th -5th grade level and I teach 9th - 12th graders. American is at the bottom of the list - I urge everyone see this movie, then start with your love ones and reach out to others. Our children are our future and that's scary. 02/12/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Superb insight into failings of American Education Bottom line from movie:Good teachers are crucial to a child's education.Bad teachers are hugely detrimental to child's education.Teacher union's only goal is to protect adults.Since 1970 (adjusted for inflation), funding for education has increased dramatically, while scores have been completely flat. It's not a funding issue.Fundamentally, unions do no allow employers to differentiate between good and bad employees. That issue has forced school boards to rotate bad teachers around, pay millions in court fees to fire bad teachers...sometimes taking years, and unions do not allow greater pay for better teachers. In fact, teacher of the year winners are fired because of "last in, first out" policies mandated by the unions.Approx 8-10% of professionals are fired each year...only 1% of teachers are fired. 09/30/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by A Must See! This movie is a must see by anyone associated with the educational system whether it be a relative, friend or neighbor. Something needs to be done to help the children and youth of the world receive the best education possible. If we do not learn history we are doomed to repeat it! 03/15/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★ by I think the movie was more moving than the book. It put in perspective what our school systems are having deal with across the nation. If we don't find an equitable solution and fix the problems facing them we will continue to fall behind. We are rated against many international countries and they are leaving us behind in Science, Math and even Reading. The United States is in the lower quadrant when it comes to being ranked. We are the greatest nation and their is no excuse for this. Going forward I hope our leaders who make the decision concerning education we rethink they position and help to solve the problem and not be the problem. 07/03/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great documentary for people who "Really" care! This documentary moved me so much when I saw it in a theater. I've been talking about it and begging people to see it anytime the subject of failure in the inner city came up. Few people have the time or inclination to explore what's really happening to our inner cities.I decided to buy a copy so I could place it in their hand everytime they said "that's interesting, I'll have to see it." 03/28/2014
