Based on the fact that my XP laptop can handle gigabytes of drive, I am going to conjecture that XP can handle terabytes of drive equally well. Therefore, I am going out on a limb and saying that I see no reason why you cannot successfully plug a WD 3TB external hard drive into an XP computer. Your XP does have a USB port available, doesn't it?

Yes, if you have sp3. Win xp does not normally support drives greater than 2TB. However, because this drive has some special magic in the interface, this 3TB drive works perfectly fine with XP, and XP sees all 3TB.

If you search for it on the WD website, you will also see that their specs say it works with XP.

The Seagate external 3TB drives also work just fine with XP.

Because it doesn't list any specific Windows, if I were you I would contact the WD website to be certain.

I haven't explored the backup software yet, but the hard drive with usb3 copied my three HDs full of music and pics. I started backing up around 9 pm thinking it would take most of the night, but in less than two hours over one tb was copied. I think this is an excellent vaule for my needs.

I have had the 1TB My Book, the 2TB and now this 3TB. All have worked flawlessly. I have had this 3TB for about 6 months and it works great. I recommended it to a friend and looked up a link for her and noticed the reviews, including some negative ones. The one currently on top of the pile just didn't seem like it could be possibly true and so this is why I am adding my review. A lot of people don't know how to use computers well and that is the problem and not the fault of these drives. For example, the guy that can't play his movies? That is probably a setting or driver and the files that are saved are most likely perfectly fine. I do extensive graphics work and I save many thousands of image files so I researched before buying an external drive. I found out that Western Digital makes most of the hard drives in all kinds of computers made by a variety of manufacturers so this is why I went with the WD brand. I am confident in the Western Digital external drives and recommend them.

My 3rd WD external and I love it!

Most what on would expect from an external Hard drive. I have used this product for about two months. But I only trust two brands with my data and they are Western Digital and Panasonic. I have used WD for about three years without failures. Plug and play is always easy to set up. Additional software allows for automation of back up at regular intervals. Great product to preserve your important data.

User friendly- ideal for novices

The product was easy to install and ran right away. It includes a users manual (on the drive) that if anything is over-written. My copy of the user apps (again, on the drive) could not run. I didn't buy the drive for the user apps, anyway; I bought and got a huge amount of storage. I feel that this is a tremendous value and I am a long time satisfied Western-Digital customer. Western-Digital hard drives are known to have a longer life span than the competitors.

Great performance and great value.

I've been purchasing WD My Book drives since at least 2008 and keep purchasing them as my storage needs change with time. My 160GB My Book still works as though it was brand new. I've experienced no issues with any of my WD My Book drives and I have several.

Of course, it's a 64 bit mass storage device. If you need to use it with a 32 bit device, you should be able to partition the drive. Examples of why you might want to do this could be Win XP or apparently, a Samsung TV. Just make a backup of the included WD utilities first.

The 3TB drive itself is mechanically much faster than the older WD My Book drives I have. (Comparing apples-to-apples, 2.0 speeds.) Obviously, the 3.0 USB speeds are even faster. In some instances, 10x faster transfer speeds using 3.0 over 2.0 speeds. There are 5 more pins in a USB 3.0 cable than in a 2.0 cable. They are physically different cables. (The included cable is a dual 3.0 and 2.0 cable. Just plug it into a 3.0 hub if you are using a hub and upgrading from a 2.0 storage device.)

The included software is great. The drive is quiet. Much more quiet than my earlier WD My Book storage devices. The price relative to other brands is significantly lower.

If you are reading reviews to make a purchase decision, I can't think of a reason to not recommend this WD My Book. I purchased 2 to mirror each drive. In theory, you could rotate them in and out of a fireproof safe for additional data security.

I trust the brand. I trust this device.

I've not used the backup software and have only copied / saved all the files I wanted. I'm hoping to backup my laptop without their software because I want to remove the files such as their SW to leave more room. And why I gave it only 4*s.

- I guess I'm too used to my other ext. HD when it easily backed up using the MS backup and I also copied & pasted files I wanted easier access to.

I have also only used the 3.0 USB because I heard it was faster
(I have a 2.0 USB but chose not to try it)

Works when I save & copy

I've seen the complaints and really it often leads to misconceptions of reality. Hard drives are a luck of the draw deal and no brand is immune to failure. I've had this drive since April 2014 and it's still going strong with no problems. Let me tell you that it is under HEAVY use as a media drive spinning away at least 6 to 8 hours a day. It's slower than a bare media drive though. Spin up time can take about 5-10 seconds and I admit some impatience being used to not having to wait. Remember the larger the drive the more prone they seem to be to the risk of failure. If this is the only drive you put your stuff on and lose it all you are to blame not the drive or manufacturer. It's common sense to back your stuff up. This should not be called a backup if you don't keep the data on your computer or another drive. Despite the mediocre spin up time I'll probably buy another soon as I'm always running low on drive space.

It's what you should expect

I have 2 of these drives. 1 is a little over a year old, and the other is about 7 months old. The older one just quit working. I am attempting to find someone who can retrieve my data. I have contacted WD, but haven't heard anything yet. The newer one is also messing up. It keeps turning itself on and off. I had to unplug it because it is annoying. So, if you are looking for additional storage do NOT purchase WD drives they are pure garbage.
