The base unit from the VTech Safe&Sound DM111 DECT 6.0 Digital Audio Baby Monitor must be plugged into outlet, it cannot be used as wireless. However, the parent units can use either battery or power outlet and can be wireless.

Child unit must be plugged in. The parental unit can be plugged into the wall or use battery.

The receiver can be both wireless (battery operated) or connected to a wall. The monitor needs to be connected to a wall socket.

This monitor has little to no background noise and is very clear. I just needed a simple monitor because my other monitor(fisher price) gave up after five years and my son will only need one for about six months.   I can't get over how much quieter this one is... There is rarely ever any static or white noise.

Love it!

When my wife and I chose this for the baby shower registry, we thought "Well Vtech is a pretty decent brand they make good phones...", but after testing it out we were very satisfied with its sensitive/clear sound pick up ability.

It was even able to transmit sound coming from another room(w/ the door open didn't try closed), but the fact that you can be in the baby's room and face away being approx 8 ft away w/ your back turned and whisper real low and still hear what was being said was awesome.

Our house is fairly small and sound travels from almost anywhere, but this device will make sure we hear every breath of our little one. I recommend it for its quality and performance especially for the price.

Exceeded expectations.

The sound is very clear. You can hear everything in the room, in our case 10x15. If you want to use the receiver on the rechargeable battery power, the battery charge only lasts about 4 to 6 hours.

Over All a Good  Product

I love that the monitor doesnt pick up other sound waves from our neighbor's monitor. One thing I don't like is that it takes the monitor about a minute to connect to the other half after I turn it on every time. It's not a problem, just an inconvenience.

We purchased the VTech DM111 Safe & Sound DECT 6.0 (etc.,) for use as a monitor to place in my mother's bedroom, after she has suffered a heart attack, and three weeks later, fell and broke her hip. I specifically searched for a unit that was 'TWO-WAY' communication, so that if she called out from the other room, she would be assured that she was heard.  The product description specifically says, you can hear and talk to your baby, and scrolling down the page, TWO WAY, SECURE COMMUNICATION is a specifically listed product feature, of the "VTech DM111 Safe & Sound DECT 6.0 Digital Audio Baby Monitor with Belt Clip". I have captures of the screen and product description, and it is very clearly listed as a feature. So I ordered on, on-line and the product arrived today,..
 NO TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION,..

 Now,.. the product itself is not a bad unit, for the price. The signal is strong, fairly clear, even from across the house. We tested the unit with someone speaking with the bathroom, with the door closed, and the unit across the room, and were still able to hear what was being said. I am pleased with the functions I have, but am disappointed that I did not receive a unit/ product, with two way communication capabilities. Mom and Dad are okay with this, but this is not listed properly, mislabeled, and misleading. "I" would send it back, but hey, that's the way of things these days, and it is a sad state of affairs.

If YOU are looking for a good, strong baby monitor, I would recommend this as a LISTENING MONITOR.

Bought this sound monitor to listen for my daughter at night- a supplement to our video montior. The sound was great. But the monitor went through two full batteries in a night. A good price initially, but would be costly for batteries. Will be returning- unfortunately.
