    What's a Tablet PC?

Tablet PCs are compact, ultra-portable entertainment devices that let you read email, surf the internet, read eBooks, view photos, play games, listen to music and watch video files. Most tablets are based on a smaller operating system, which allows you to purchase and download additional applications from supported stores. Tablet PCs do not have a CD/DVD drive and will not run Microsoft Windows or its applications. Tablet PCs function as a secondary device for casual entertainment purposes, and are not meant to replace a computer. They are ideal for use around the home and on the go with WiFi or 3-4g mobile broadband connections (pay as you go, contract may be required for service).

Good tablets - buy a protection plan!
    4/25/2014

I bought three (purple, royal blue, magenta) tablets as gifts for Christmas. Understanding that the tablets were under $80 each, and that they were gifts for children - I purchased the Walmart Protection Plan for each one at a cost of $28 per tablet. As it turns out, that was a very wise investment. The tablets are fully functional out of the box. It's a minor setting change (allow 3rd party installations) to connect the tablet to my amazon account and the grandchildren have all the games they are accustomed to playing (98% of the amazon games were downloadable and playable). The apparently spoiled grandchildren felt these tablets were slower than my Kindle and groaned a little - but I set that straight by suggesting they could earn the money to purchase a Kindle. Suddenly the Visual Land tablets were just fine. The first tablet issue was the Royal Blue tablet. One day it simply would not power on, and to my knowledge, it had not been dropped or misused. It was within the store return warranty period, so I contacted walmart.com and the tablet was replaced very quickly. End of problem, replacement tablet is still functioning well. Tablet issue #2 was the purple tablet - somehow little sister got the tablet in her hands and dropped it. The result was a tiny, almost invisible crack. Because I had never removed the shipping plastic from the screen, and the crack was so tiny, I didn't worry about it. However, if you read the safety instruction in the manual, it clearly states that the tablet should NEVER be operated with any damage to the LCD screen. There is a reason for that statement - very quickly the tiny crack became a huge crack covering the entire screen diagonally and could be felt as well as seen. I did contact Visual Land about the warranty, but was told that the original dropping of the tablet voided the warranty. I wasn't surprised, and I filed my claim with the Walmart Product Protection Plan. Once again, it was fast and easy. Claim form is online; I received the shipping label via email in less than 30 minutes. Wrapped up the tablet and ALL accessories that originally came with it (per instructions). Next day, I dropped it off at UPS (who provided a receipt without me even asking). By the time I got home, I had another email from Walmart Product Protection Plan with an e-gift card in the amount of my purchase and instructions on how to redeem it. I went to walmart.com immediately and ordered the exact same tablet (which was now $10 more than at Christmas), received free shipping to my door and had the tablet in hand within two days. Not bad. I want to mention that this was my first (ever) claim on the Walmart Product Protection Plan. I have purchased the plan many times on various products, but never had to use it. Although I am pleased with the ease of claim and the speed of resolution; I'm not happy about the fact that a single claim fulfills the contract. My Kindle is insured through Square Trade, and they allow 3 replacements over the course of the contract. Admittedly, I paid more for the Kindle insurance, but I paid more for the Kindle as well. When you make a claim through the Walmart Product Protection Plan, the new device is not covered. You have to purchase a new plan for the new device. To be honest, I covered the new purple tablet with a Square Trade plan. It was actually $10 less than the Walmart Plan and it covers everything EXCEPT loss or theft. Most recently was tablet issue #3, this has been my only real problem with customer service (Visual Land, not Walmart). The magenta tablet belongs to a five-year-old, the same little sister who dropped the purple tablet. One day she is playing with her tablet (Minecraft is a huge hit at my house) and she is told to power down for dinner. I did not notice any issues with the tablet, but when she next powered up - the tablet didn't come on. After pressing the reset button a couple of times, the screen had lines of various colors scrolling across the tablet vertically at what appeared to be a high rate of speed (photos are below). No amount of resets or power-cycling would bring the tablet back to normal. I went back to the Walmart Protection Plan page to file a claim, and they suggested I contact the manufacturer first as my device is still under warranty. Knowing that I have only one replacement under this plan, I decide to take the suggestion. I emailed Visual Land and received a request for three photos of the tablet screen when it is on, so they can determine if it is covered under warranty. I submit the photos and receive this response (which I have cut-and-pasted from the actual email): *************************************************** Hello, The warranty on our products is a one-year manufacture warranty. This warranty covers any manufacturing defects within the tablets. Unfortunately, LCD and external screen damage are not covered under the warranty. Due to the compact design of the tablet, removal of the screen for repair would damage the internals beyond repair. We can however, offer you an exchange for a fee of $50. If you are interested we would need the following: First/Last Name Complete Model#: Color of Tablet: GB Memory: MM/DD/YYYY of Purchase: Place of Purchase: If you do not wish to yet pursue this option, if you purchased an extended warranty from which the company you purchased the tablet directly, you may contact them to see if their warranty will cover this. Best Regards, AJ Visual Land Team Support Representative Phone: (562) 860-2669 Office Hours: M-F 8AM-5PM PST ****************************************************** Apparently, Visual Land feels the LCD is not part of the manufacturing process. I emailed again and protested that the screen was not damaged. It still had the original plastic from shipping attached. I told them it was ridiculous to suggest the LCD was not part of the warranty as it is an integral part of tablet - one cannot function with the other. And I stated that the $50 fee was outrageous and they should be replacing this tablet free of charge. This was the response: ******************************************************* Hello, Based on the images you provided the LCD only reacts that way when a tablet has been dropped. Because of this, we will not be replacing your tablet for free. Best Regards, AJ Visual Land Team Support Representative Phone: (562) 860-2669 Office Hours: M-F 8AM-5PM PST ******************************************************** So...I filed a claim with the Walmart Product Protection Plan, and received the same great service that Walmart always provides to me - quick, courteous resolution of the problem. When I receive the e-gift card this time, I might not purchase another Visual Land tablet. Although I received replacements of each tablet, I am concerned that two of three tablets failed (the dropped tablet doesn't count), and that I would be out-of-luck if I didn't purchase the protection plans. I am also not happy with the tone of the Visual Land Support Representative, but that is a personal preference. I want to mention that the "bonus case" included with these tablets are terrible. The elastic straps cover both the port to charge the tablet and the button on top that controls volume. The kids hate the bulk of the covers and always take them off. Today I noticed Walmart is offering a Visual Land 7" Safety Bumper for $18. I still have at least two tablets in the home and will be purchasing these bumpers today. The third will wait until I decide if I am even buying another Visual Land tablet. It is a good tablet; it is under $90...maybe I shouldn't expect so much from Visual Land Customer Support. BUY A PRODUCT PROTECTION PLAN! I know this is a long review, and if you are here at the end - thank you. It took a long time to write this, and likely a long time to read it. I hope I have helped your decision!

My wife and daughter are 100% Apple users and warned me not to get anything but an Apple iPad, but so far this Visual Land tablet is perfect for me. The Google Apps are excellent and pretty much all free. No need to create an account with credit card, etc as required for Apple Store. The display on the Visual Land is very clear and sharp. It was so easy to set up. I was up and running in 5 minutes and have had no issues at all with performance, adding new apps or any other problems with the tablet. Compared to the Apple iPad Mini which I was just about to purchase at 3x the price, I can't find any issues with the Visual Land. It does and has everything I wanted in a tablet. And it works great (and came with a case). Sorry Apple...

I just received my new Prestige tablet and have not put it down. This tablet is fantastic. I am able to send and receive email with ease and connect to Facebook and other social networks fast. I have uploaded pictures and there is no stalling. This tablet is fast and I like how I can navigate between screens in no time at all. Planning on buying 2 more for my kids.

    • A. Yes, it has dual cameras. But the front camera is only 0.3 mp. Barely adequate for video chat. The rear camera is 2 mp. Takes an OK picture, but is fixed focus, not auto focus. The fixed focus makes the optimum focus at one specific distance.

How much of the 16GB is for apps? My 8GB tablet only allows for about 500MB of app storage, and I don't need a lot of room for data. I can't have more than about 5 apps on here, even though it has about 5 home screens...

    • A. You can disable programs or apps that you don't use. Or can not be uninstalled. To free up memory. Google has a lot of apps on this that I have disabled. And apps that you download (most) of them can be moved to the internal "nand flash" "SD Card", storage drive (16gb), well actually about 12gb. Since the Android OS and it's support files takes some room in the 16gb area.

    • A. Most all of it, you just need to switch the app location from tablet to the SD card. You cannot do this with the pre-installed apps but you can with the those you install.

    • A. Now that I have this tablet, I am answering my own question, in case anyone else is wondering. Out of the 16GB of total storage, only 1 GB is allotted for apps, which includes space that the pre-installed apps take up. Some apps can be moved to the "internal SD" card, which is not the same as an SD card that you would insert, but only a few apps can be moved.

    • A. It is set up really oddly. It has 1GB on board memory and then has an internal 16gig card that is labeled within the system as an "SD Card" so you have to move apps over to it in order to keep it running smoothly. I also disabled several of the installed apps and uninstalled their updates. All-in-all it's a great little tablet for the price and so far my daughter loves it!
