Noticed there aren't alot of people that are giving this positive reviews. We happen to think this vaporizer *it is not a humidifier* works awesome for it's cost. For less then $20 bucks, it's extremely simple to operate. Put water into tank up to the fill mark *make sure not to overfill, it "spits" water* and plug into the wall. If you look closely at the steam guard, you can see the steam this unit is making. After a few hours, glance again and the water level is dropping. If there isn't enough steam for your liking, add a pinch or two of salt. This will make the water hotter, therefor creating more steam. Only problem I've found, is if you put in too much salt, the unit tends to die quickly. We learned this the hard way, first unit lasted 6 months, but the replacement we purchased is working awesome *bought the same unit again, just using less salt* Very easy to clean as well, once every few weeks let it soak in pure vinegar for 20 minutes, rinse throughly, and continue with your regular use. Maybe you can purchase other vaporizers / humidifiers for $100, but compare prices, for $20, you can't go wrong!!

I was hesitant to buy this product because of all the negative reviews. When I went to my local Walmart, it was on special for $10 so I figured I couldn't go wrong for that price. I've had it for almost a year and it's been fantastic. I use it when the sparks start flying in the house or during a sinus episode so the unit gets used regularly in the winter. I've never had to use salt to get more steam and clean up is very easy. The grey scaling effect is kind of gross in the tank but a little soak with vinegar takes care of everything about once every 2 weeks. A full tank goes 16-18 hours before needing a refill. Easy to use, easy to clean and a great price. What's not to like?

Works if you add salt!

We've tried cool mist humidifiers but they were impossible to keep clean inside, and ended up with mold/mildew (gross!). We bought two of these, several years ago (needed one in each bedroom). No, they don't work well, unless you add salt to the water in the tank. Then they work great! At least they have for us. If yours has stopped working or doesn't seem to work great, try adding a little salt to the tank. Hopefully that will help.

  • A. Depending on the hardness of your water and how much salt you added to the water it should take about 15 minutes.

  • A. mine starts showing steam within about 10 mins or so - give or take. If there is no steam put your hand in front of the unit and feel for the steam. If nothing, exhange your unit.

  • A. It depends on the temp of the water, if you put in cold water straight from your kitchen sink, it may take 5 minutes. If you put in warm / hot water, the steam will come out within seconds. Keep in mind the unit has to heat up the water in order to produce water vapors.

  • A. Depends on the hardness of your water. Try a pinch or two. If you don't get steam, add more a pinch at a time until you get the steam you want. But note, it could take 10-15 minutes between additions for the results to show. It's a pain but you only have to do this trial and error process once and maybe not at all depending on your water.

  • A. Absolutely do NOT add water to the unit. The manufacturer specifically states NOT to use salt OR softened water (because of the salt-content in salt water). This is because the salt lowers the boiling point. (Ever salt your water on the stove to get it to boil sooner/quicker?) If you use salt or softened water, the water will BOIL too easily/quickly and instead of the quiet sound the unit typically makes, you may now hear the sound of BOILING WATER. The unit is controlled to NOT give off too much steam at a time...it's a safety feature. Regular tap water (UN-softened) is ideal.

  • A. The instructions make recommendations as to the salt but it depends on your water. If you have hard water you may not need salt. If your water is pretty normal, you will probably only need a pinch. Just adjust the amount until you have nice steam coming out.

  • A. Start with a little and then see. The reason for the salt is because your water may not have enough ions. DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER. Basically how this works is there are two probes in the vaporizer that conduct a electric charge. However, in order for the charge to run, they have to go through a medium ( like electricity running through a wire). If the water has no ions, then there is no medium.

  • A. I'd try a pinch of baking soda instead of salt. Start with a pinch, if it's not working in a few minutes, add another pinch until it works. The amount you need depends on the harness of your water.

  • A. So water in general is not pure. Water is the great solvent, meaning they dissolve a lot of things. You can not see it in the water but there is a lot of things dissolved in it. When you steam the water, what is dissolved in the water will not be included in the steam. The black stuff is just the residue, it is not mold or anything. Just clean it out. Also DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER in a n effort to not have the black residue. Distilled water has no ions and thus there will be no steam created.

  • A. Nothing to worry over. It is the particles from the dirt and stuff in the air. If your using it often just rinse and change out the water after each use.To clean it you just set the middle part in a tupperware with some vinegar and water to soak for about ten minutes. Rinse with water and tap out the gunk the best you can. The bottom part you just rinse with some water and then dry. Put it up and it will be ready to go for the next flu season. Remember you wont always get all the gunk but its okay it wont harm you
