I bought two of these humidifiers because we now live in OK where the air is dryer and because my son is asthmatic. After about a week of use I realized that both humidifiers were leaving a filmy layer of residue on my children's furniture. I immediately discontinued using it as I did not want my children inhaling whatever it was that was being emitted. I am attaching photos that clearly shows the residue/film left on my furniture as a result of using this product.

I am a humidifier novice. This is my first and I've only had it for 24+ hours, but I'm happy with it. There is zero leakage, condensation, or hassle and it's very quiet. I do find it curious that when I fill the water tank to overflowing there is still a 1/2 inch of air at the top when I turn it right-side up. Today I ran it on high from 8:45 am to 7:15 pm. There was an 1 to 1 1/2 inches of air in the top when I started and 1/2 an inch of water in the tank when I stopped, so I'd say it would run on high for a complete 12 hours, though it really does have to be level to work properly. I live in a one room apartment and had to make several adjustments to accomplish that. I don't want to go into the myriad of small physical inconveniences this humidifier appears to be rectifying; I'll just say I'm sleeping better than I have in twenty years. It works for me.

First of all, I want to comment on the previous person's review about where the 1/2 of water goes after she fills it up to the top. I noticed this as well, and I'm nearly 100% positive it goes into the machine. Bubbles go up in the water like it is going into another compartment where it takes the water from. Now on to my review, I purchased this because my 2 month old was coughing a bit and was quite stuffy after both my fiance and I had come down with the cold. My doctor told me to purchase a cool mist humidifier for the room. I was a bit hesitant about purchasing any humidifier from anywhere because of the pretty negative reviews, however I bit the bullet and purchased it, and I'm so happy I did. I have slept better, my son who sleeps with me sleeps better and my fiance sleeps better. I am stuffy when I go out into the living room and as soon as I go back into our room, my nose is cleared! I fill it up maybe once a day, sometimes twice because it is on, set to high 24:7, but who cares if you have to add water that much, seriously, it takes maybe 20 seconds to fill it up. It is a bit noisy on high, but I can't sleep without some kind of white noise (fan, a/c) so it doesn't bother me at all. It does the job of moistening the air perfectly, and I'm so glad I went with this purchase despite the bad reviews. You won't regret this purchase. Just a tip: If you have a stuffy son/daughter, my doctor suggested holding him/her right over the cool mist for a little bit. It seems to work great!

Loud, Unable to Clean Out Mold

This humidifier worked well at first. Puts out a good amount of moist air for about 8 hours total. There are 2 main problems with this, though. 1) Difficulty sleeping with it on. It is very LOUD! So loud that it is difficult to fall asleep with it on, even when it is on the low setting. Another problem with sleeping is that the nightlight built in is actually quite bright. 2) After using this humidifier despite the trouble sleeping, it started to grow quite a bit of mold inside of the vented area. I tride to take it apart and clean it to get the mold out, but is impossible to get to the location of the mold without breaking the machine! Needless to day, I am now frustrated, sick, and my apartment is full of dry air! I would not recommend this humidifier to anyone.

Take this from someone who reads these reviews and listens to comments, alot of mixed reviews but I love it....the nightlight is not bright (unless you have it in you face)...it is not that loud actually one of the more quiet ones that I have had (and I have had alot)...I have 2 right now that I can not find replacement filters for and this one I don't have to worry about that. I do not know why mold would have ever built up on it (had mine for 2 years and have had no sign of mold). I will probably get rid of the other 2 and just get 2 more of these instead of going through the replacement filter hassle. TAKE IT FROM A BUSY MOM OF 3, GET IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

This is my first humidifier. I have been looking for one for quite some time and at Walmart. I feel the price is slightly on the higher side but no complaints due to the performance. Out of the box, filled the tank with water and put this ON. I found this 'quite' and the looks of this model are good. The blue color and overall shape is good. Put this next to the wall or in the corner it looks good. The mist controls are good. On lower control the hissing sound is very low. The night light is OK ... good to have types. Note that you need to keep this on a flat surface...may be a hard one (stiff carpet or wooden floor). There is no leakage at all however the lower tray fills water from the tank which is used by the machine to throw out the mist. Thus on soft surface if the unit tilts then water could spill from the lower tray thus the stiff flat surface. The mist is cool and visible. It looks nice. Overall 1 day and I am pretty happy with my purchase.

I've had this particular Vicks humidifier for the past two years. It is the best humidifier I've ever purchased, and at my age, I've purchased many warm mist and cool mist humdifiers over the years. For those complaining about the "white film," that's simply dried mineral deposits from your water. To avoid the white dust, purchase DISTILLED WATER for $.85 to $1.00 a gallon or purchase demineralization tablets at a hardware store. For those who are complaining about the loudness of the fan, most vortex units will start out fairly quiet, but get louder...it's simply the fan noise. For those complaining that the green glow of the light is too bright, put a piece of duct tape or something over the light. For those complaining of mold, clean and completely dry the unit more often; stagnent water not only breeds mold, but breeds bacteria as well...regardless of what humidifier you are using. I love this unit, and when it finally dies, I hope Vicks still makes this specific model. It's easy to fill, easy to clean (just wish they made it so the entire unit could be disassembled for a really thorough cleaning#, has an excellent output and increases the humidity level quickly.

FILTER FREE IS THE WAY TO GO!!!

Ok, I have used 3 different types of humidifiers over the past couple years. -The heating kind broke after a year of use (should last a lot longer in my opinion). It also got really dirty and scaly after a couple weeks. This particular one was a pain to clean and never got fully clean. The metal rod that heated up got all scaly, rusty and gross. -The filter kind. This is a rip off. You spend $25 on the humidifier and then $4 every month on a new filter. The filters always got gross after a week, and I would then use vinegar to clean it up a bit. It would still only last a month at best. I also let the filter dry every day, but it didn't extend the life very long. They also didn't bring the humidity up much. I tried using a sponge as a filter, but it didn't work. -Vicks filter free. This is my third humidifier in a year, and I am ecstatic! It doesn't take filters, it doesn't heat the water, it simply spins the water up (vortex effect). This is similar to the one that I grew up with, and it shouldn't ever die. It's simply a motor that spins! It is easy to maintain. It has a tray on the bottom where the water collects. The best way to keep it clean is to let it dry daily. I empty the bottom tray, and then take the top two halves off. It takes only a second, and is easier than letting the gunk build up. It drys on its own, and I then fill it up at night. Use a little vinegar with it every once and a while, and you're good. I tested how effective it is in my bedroom. It's a large bedroom, approximately 14' x 20' with vaulted ceilings. I set it to medium (high is kind of too loud) and it went from 30% humidity to 50% humidity within about an hour. It maintained this level all night. It is loud, but any humidifier that uses a motor will be on par as far as loudness. I personally like the white noise and it helps me sleep. The heating kind is quieter, but gets too dirty too quick and is unreliable. I highly recommend this for a small/medium sized room. It's a great price, and is much better than the other methods. You save money over the long run.

I had purchased my humidifier a year ago when my little one was just over a year after attempting on a few others. She had a terrible cough so I went to the store in the middle of the night and grabbed a vaporizer, which depending on your water (ph and salt) doesn't work. So I tried for my second attempt with a humidifier that had a filter. In litterally 4 days the filter was covered in minerals because of the water. Went to purchase a filter and they were around $10!!! I grabbed this one because it was filterless and LOVE it! Haven't had any problems. It does make some noise because of the fan but I don't see that as a problem at all, especially if you like white noise. We live in Colorado where the air takes the moisture from you! My daughter now has been having slight bloody noses during the night so I have set up this one in her room. Expecting #2 any day now, I decided to go for another humidifier instead of a sound machine (kills 2 birds with one stone). I love it. Almost completely maintenance free and no expensive filters! In my opinion if you have to fill the tank every few hours... It's because your air is that dry! Completely worth the 30 seconds it takes to refill the tank.

I purchased this humidifier as it is filter-free. We run it in our kids' room through the night and sometimes during the day. It does then need to be filled once a day but there is a noticeable difference in the air moisture after just running it for an hour or so. The nightlight feature is nice, giving off a soft green glow. Although the fan has 3 speeds, we have just used the lowest and it is quiet enough that we are able to run it while the kids are sleeping.

    • A. There is a mild green night light on this unit that cannot be turned off. It's not irritating, though. It's a very soft light.

    • A. If you look at the packaging you'll see a little green Vicks triangle or some shape. That's it. It glows, but it's not used as a night light for you to see with and move around a room. I'm assuming it's just to lead you to the adjustment nob on the humidifier.

What's the benefit of using a Vicks humidifier and one without Vicks. What is the difference between a cool mist as opposed to a warm mist humidifier. Also when should you use steam as opposed to warm mist. I do know there are benefits of all humidifiers but I would like to know more about the different types. There's too many choices it's confusing.

    • A. Ask your doctor. Some recommend cool mist for different breathing issues and warm mist for others. I believe more and more doctors recommend cool mist due to its lesses chance of spreading mold and/of bacteria around....if cleaned properly and often.

Vicks products do not have to be run in it. I only run water. I use it because we have electric heat and it's very, very dry in our house.

    • A. Most of the Vicks ones have a warmer where you can put a scented oil pad. (some don't) Cool mist keeps a room from being dry, warm mist helps break congestion from a cold. I have both kinds, and I use my cool mist more often than a the warm.

    • A. Don't worry about using their vicks medicine stuff with the humidifier. Just use it as a humidifier. Cool mist usually uses filters (this one doesn't, which is AWESOME) and fans to create the humidity. The warm kind uses a rod that heats up the water. In general the cool ones are louder (I like the white noise and it doesn't bother me), and the heat ones are quiet. The heat ones are tougher to clean and break faster. The cold ones are easier to clean (especially this one) and are simpler in design and last longer. DON'T get the filter kind though. They are expensive over time. This one is great. I have had all the different kinds, and this one is great!!!

    • A. The warm mist V icks needs to be tweeked before it works right. Mine needed salt and I like the fact that the cool mist Vicks, you just add water, plug in, turn on and go. My cool mist Vicks can be used with a small Vicks pad or you can just use it with water. Just a choice.
