Enhance Laptop DVD/CD Capabilities This IDE to USB 2.0 External Optical Drive Enclosure allows me make use of a spare IDE CD/DVD burner with Lightscribe capabilities. I use this setup with my laptop PC to provide easier disk swapping and faster burning and reading than the built-in CD/DVD burner. The unit is ready to use out of the box. My Windows 7 PC recognized it and installed the appropriate drivers automatically. If you have a spare IDE optical drive, this product will allow you to quickly put it back into production. 04/20/2011
Solidly Built External Housing for IDE DVD Drive This product was easy to assemble (despite poor illustrations in the instructions), works well, and feels rock solid. Even has a fan. And I like the fact that the power supply is inside the unit, so I don't need to deal with yet another power brick. It allows me to use a desktop-sized optical drive/burner burner with my laptop. The supplied USB and power cables are long and high-quality, It is easy to repack snugly for transporting if desired (there's even a plastic carrying handle). If you plan to use it for playback in a darkened room (I don't), be aware that there is a large, extremely bright blue led. But you can tape over it.I got it at an unusually low price from WalMart.com. My only complaint is that it sounded like it was flopping around somewhat in the shipping box. Maybe they didn't use quite enough bubble-wrap, and/or maybe some of it popped. But Vantec's packaging is very protective. 02/14/2012
Optical Drive External Enclosure I got a new computer and it is all SATA and the hard drives and DVD/CD +- R from my old computer were fine, but the connections on them are IDE. This product works great and uses a USB to connect to the computer. I can use it for the new PC and my laptop. It is a real bargin at this price.I highly recomend it. 04/11/2011
