My motherboard is IDE so the description of this product says that it converts IDE devices to SATA? What is the difference and is there another cable that will work here?

  • A. This Vantec Converter is made for your configuration. It is made to allow your SATA drive to work with your IDE connection cables.

  • A. Since your motherboard has IDE drive sockets, it probably doesn't have any SATA sockets. This Vantec IDE-to-SATA converter would come in handy if you ever decided to install a SATA hard drive (or DVD drive) in the PC. SATA (Serial ATA) is a newer, faster interface than the older IDE. SATA cables are much thinner (unlike those wide ribbon cables for IDE), and take up less space in your computer case.

  • A. Serial ATA (SATA or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is a computer bus interface for connecting host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Serial ATA was designed to replace the older ATA (AT Attachment) standard (also known as EIDE), offering several advantages over the older parallel ATA (PATA) interface: reduced cable-bulk and cost (7 conductors versus 40), native hot swapping, faster data transfer through higher signalling rates, and more efficient transfer through an (optional) I/O queuing protocol. - Wiki This product is used if your motherboard doesn't have IDE and your hard drive or device only has IDE, or if you want to use SATA instead of IDE and your machine has an empty SATA port.

This is perfect to transform an IDE drive to SATA. It is seamless as no drivers were needed to install on Win 7. If you want to expand your storage or use an older CDRW or some other IDE drive just add to to your SATA slots and start up your PC.

IDE to SATA Converter comes up short

I was satisfied with the product up to a point. The conversion kit did NOT contain a power (jumper) cord. I had to purchase it separately, which I certainly was not planning to do. The information on this product indicated that everything that was needed for a conversion was included, which was not the case.

I needed to connect an old IDE (PATA) drive to my new SATA motherboard. the good: product works and comes with power and data cables. the not-so-good: the power adaptor only works with the older IDE 4 pin power connector, but my new computer only has the newer SATA power connectors. the adaptor data connectors are in-line, so it sticks out the back of your drive ~1.5". For me, the new computer's drive bays point to the case side, instead of into the body of the case, so the adaptor is too big to fit. summary: works fine, but watch the orientation of your drives to make sure you have room for the adaptor, and you need the older PATA/IDE 4 pin power connector coming from your power supply to use this.

Just plug it in tight and make sure everything's connected. Also, a sidenote, if you can't get BIOS to see your (what I used this for) DVD rom, you may need to switch it from Master to Slave device. I'd thought it was a problem with the product at first but it was just a simple mistake on my part. Great product! Great price!
