  • A. You need the bases, not necessarily the stand. The bases are typically connected to the stand, but you could disconnect them and operate from the ground or whatever.

  • A. just the base which attaches to the stand and makes your back ALOT more happy than picking them off the floor, but to answer your question, u dont have to use the stand

  • A. You don't need the stand as the weights are set into their own stands, which then mount to the bars/metal stand. The stand itself takes up little room and makes grabbing the weights easier in my opinion.

  • A. You do not need the stand, but you do need the bases for the dumbells. There are raised metal tabs on the bases that disengage the locking mechanism so that you can adjust the weights.

  • A. You don't need the stand, just the holding tray for the dumbbells.

  • A. Yes, I believe they must be in their cradles or holders. To my understanding, they can not be adjusted "on the fly"

  • A. When you change the weight, there are two trays that will hold the unconnected "plates" but you don't need the stand to change them. The stand just raises them a bit and makes it easier to pick up. I am using my set without the stand and have the weights on a bench.

This is a great, quality set with a solid stand and one of the simplest and straight-forward weight switching mechanisms on the market. See the included video link for an overview of the set showing how it all works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpHg05oGWOo

Walmart associate

I often exercise with free weights, but never thought I would want to dedicate the space to a big set of dumbbells for home use. These solved the problem by being, I think, 17 weights in a single set. The two dumbbells come with a stand and trays to hold the unused "plates" when not attached to the handles. You don't have to use the stand, but it will raise them off the floor to make them easier to pick-up. I opted to not use the stand and just put the trays on a bench. These are iron weights with a plastic coating and the quality was very good. The dial to select the weight was really smooth and easy to adjust. Unlike the old-style dumbbells with plates, you can change the weight on these in literally one second. The dumbbells are a little bulky compared to a solid dumbbell of comparable weight, though you can still do the same types of motion in almost all cases. The other thing that I had to get used to is when you're putting them back in the tray and are tired, you need to make sure you align them correctly in the grooves or they won't set in properly. I probably would have gotten a heavier set, since 45 lbs per hand is a bit light for some muscle-groups (dumbbell press, etc.). For most other exercises, however, the range these offered was sufficient. Pros: Space saving, easy (and quick) to adjust, quality product Cons: A bit pricey, a little bulky, returning dumbbells to trays

I got exactly what I was looking for. Perfect for P90X. Changing weights is quick and versatile. Better price than the Bowflex device, and made by the same company. Very happy with the purchase.

I've only had these adjustable dumbells a couple weeks but so far I'm quite pleased. For the price, they meet all my needs. Adjustment is easy. One note, the units must be in their cradle to adjust the weights. You can't do that "on the fly". The stand is a little lightweight, but perfectably serviceable.

I was looking around many stores for a set of these dumbells, they were all too expensive ,I also noticed that Sports Authority had the same exact set for $200 more. Then I saw these at Walmart and I ordered them, shipping was fast, only a few days and I had them at my door, excellent service and price, you can't beat Walmart. :)
