Yes. I had a set of 20lb hand weights ("Gold's Gym") that I purchased at Walmart on sale about a year ago. Each one of the hand weights has two 7.5lb weights and two 2.5lb weights that slide on & off making them adjustable. These weights easily fit this barbell giving me ALOT of options with every weight size.

I don't know if the bar can take extra wt but I bought extra 2.5 lb plates and the fit the bar. I wanted smaller wt increments.

Don't think that would be a problem. There is room and the bar is sturdy enough for 70 lbs total.

Yes, you should be able to add an extra 4" of weights on each side. The bar is not super strong, but 70 pounds should be no problem I've got 60 on mine right now.

No. I find it somewhat difficult to grip and lift them, but I'm aging and trying to protect my nails. there are "holes" but all are too small for fingers.

No. The weights are perfect cylinders. But the heaviest weight is 10 pounds, so they are pretty easy to handle.

Do the plates have hand slots on one side to make them easier to grip?

I am only 4' 10" and just slightly taller than the bar which I assume is 4 1/2'. I find this set easy to handle.

The bar may be 5lbs, but it certainly doesn't feel that heavy. It seems regulation size to me--not too long and not too short. I am 5'5" and just turned 55 yo, and it feels fine to me.

The overall length is about 55", a little shorter than a pro quality bar, so it should be ideal for you.

I use this set to do my Les Mills Pump workout at home and it's just as good as the set that they have at the gym. I also purchased the Gold's Gym 40 Lb. dumbbell set and the two together gives me plenty of weight options for my workout. Considering I paid $57 for both sets together and the Les Mills set costs $120 with less weights, you can't beat the price. I wish I had waited a week because this set went down from $37 to $30. Regardless though, still absolutely worth it.

Great set for cardio weight training!

I got this set to use with Body Pump, and it works perfect. I just had to go out and buy some 2.5lb weights. The only negative of this set is that the clips are difficult to put on and off.

Just what I was looking for

This item is newly purchased, but I must say that for the price (and free shipping to store), it was the best deal I was able to find on a weight set for women to use. I am 5 ft. 5 in., and proportionate... the grips on the bar fit my arm spread comfortably.

The black colored bar is textured for grip. The weight plates aren't the most nicely finished, but I think they are durable. I bought for function, not aesthetics. Spring clips hold the plates on the bar, and you have to get them turned just right to hold the plates snugly... just keep working till you achieve the desired stability.

Item is as described, was simple enough to put together, and the plastic coated plates are preferable (to me), over metal ones.

It was a hard item to find, and if I found a better deal, the difference was so miniscule that I went with WalMart's offer. VERY hard to beat Amazon, but overall, this deal did.

50 lbs in just weights alone cost $40 at walmart, and yet you get 55 lbs and the bar..cannot go wrong with this set!

It's a very reasonable weight set. Under $40 for 55 lb , a great vaule. It's a bit hard to change weights . The clamper is hard to push down to the bar so can lock the plate in place. Other then that good item to have for home gym.

Great $$$ for weight bar set :)

I was looking for inexpensive beginner set and this is it. The reviews said I would need a bigger set too soon, but I'm here to tell you, I couldn't get this one out of my trunk without carrying it piece by piece into the house. I can only hope I need more weights someday.

It was easy enough to follow the directions for putting the bar together. Nothing was said at all about using the clips or the best way to arrange the weights. That's the only reason for my 4 stars instead of 5.

Perfect for aging beginner

I didn't give five stars only because it didn't come with 2.5lb plates and I think that increasing the weight by 10 lbs at a time would be too much for me. I'm 63. I bought extra 2.5 lb plates at Walmart. I also like that its made in the U.S.

Good starter for women

I ordered this product so I can start my bodypump workout again, though the plates are a bit thicker and more plastic look compared to the Gold's gym plates (thinner) I would still recommend it if your not picky and also if the thickness doesnt bother you at all. Four 10lbs and two 5lbs are included. So its really worth the money working out at home.

Cheap and Easy to use!

Good tool for home fitness, product came just as described. No complaints as of yet, can't beat it for the price!

Just what you expect,

First, be aware that the total weight of the set is actually 54 lbs: that's 2-5 lb plates, 4-10 lb plates, and a 4 lb bar ( that cannot be disassembled once you put it together). There is no way the two bar clips weigh a pound!
I am still very, very pleased with the set, and the price I paid was right up my alley! The set arrived missing a 10 lb plate, but Walmart.com customer service issued me a partial credit, which I used to replace the plate.
If 54 lbs is all you need, I recommend this item hands down.
