TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-File + State 2009 4.7 5 415 974
DeLuxe meets expectations I've been using TT and TaxCut as long as they have been around. Prior users of DeLuxe will like the fact that their state refund is always showing. Also, all of last year's charities are also listed. Note that if you gave multiple times to one charity, whereas last year you completed a separate document for each donation, this year you complete one update for a particular charity then add to it for subsequent days of donations when you gave on specific days, although this isn't clear from the instructions. As in the past, TT has a problem discerning multiple donations that total <$500 from a single donation, thus asks unnecessary Qs about donations. The list of the previous year's entries, which I found most useful in helping make sure I was on the right track with this year's entries, has been omitted. This was a great feature that should not have been removed. The CD form of TT Deluxe runs fine, but the on-line version gave two error messages with every click. An e-mail to TT asking for assistance went unanswered. There is stilll no ability to copy data summaries as you go along, because TT masks the right mouse clicks, thus making an in-process record of those things you want to see later cannot be done. Also, the on-line version did not have a way to select "new return", but immediately downloaded last year's data and continued along that path. There is not a "Begin New Return" button or file to select. If the on-line version was my first introduction to TT, I would have dumped it and looked for a tax program that worked. 12/22/2009
Not as good as previous years This year's TurboTax Deluxe has several flaws, in my opinion.First, the Deluxe version does not allow any capital gains entries. I believe this was there in past years. While doing my tax, I had a capital gains issue; and this required me to upgrade to the Premier version for an additional $32.70. After finishing the federal tax return, I tried to go to the state return. However, I was told I would have to pay an additional fee ($30.00, I believe) to continue with the state return. This occurred despite the fact that the Deluxe version I had purchased included a state return. After several e-mails back and forth, Intuit e-mailed me the state return program at no cost. There is one confusing area which they could have handled better. In our state, pension income is not taxable on state while it is taxable on federal. TurboTax carried over this income to the state return and offered no easily accessible way to remove this from taxable income. A call to Intuit informed me that I would have to click on "Forms" in the upper right section of the display and manually make this correction. This should not be necessary. There should be a question somewhere in the software asking whether such income is taxable. I believe this was the case in past years.Don't expect quick service on e-mails. Replies will likely take 3-4 days. 02/11/2010
Great Product Been using it for years and would not use any other tax product as it carries over info from year to year and lets me do tax planning for the next year. I buy it as soon as it is available and complete my estimated taxes before year end. 12/15/2009
