additional RAM memory? I was reading on a web site that talked about how you can get an external hard drive to be used partially as RAM. It didn't sound hard, although I don't recall now what I had to do. I have the web site saved. Has anyone ever heard of this? Will this solve my problem with slowness, and near crashes due to lack of RAM? Thank you!

    • A. Not really. It's not recommendable to use an external USB drive as a swap memory device; even though it has a fast USB 3 connection that's still awfully slow compared to the internal bus that your computer / netbook has, connecting the RAM (internal memory) to the CPU. Honestly, if your netbook supports installing more memory, you're far better off installing more RAM (or swapping the currently installed memory stick out for one with a larger supported capacity). If you search around with Google you'll see the extra memory won't break the bank. For example, I have a little ASUS EeePC 701 netbook that came with 512MB RAM and an internal SSD (it's like a "hard drive") of a mere 4GB. I recently put in more memory costing me about $25 so now it has a total of 2GB RAM, and with this little external drive I'm on top of the world again, traveling around with all my working apps (search Google for Portable Apps) and all documents, on a Windows XP netbook that hardly shows its venerable age (I got it back in 2007...) Of course your results may vary, it just depends on your existing netbook and its available memory upgrade options.

    • A. This will not speed up the operation of your netbook. While I don't know what you're referencing regarding using an external drive to speed up the computer, it won't solve the low memory problem. A hard drive, internal or external, is used only for storing data. The computer does all it's work in the memory (RAM). When the computer doesn't have enough room in memory for the data it needs to perform an operation it must move data not needed at that moment out to the hard drive, and pull in the data it needs for that operation.Hard drive access is slower than memory access, so that is where your computer slows down. If your netbook can support more memory than you have now, you'll gain some speed by upgrading it. With laptops starting under $300 you might want to consider getting a newer, more powerful laptop.

Very good value; its small size makes it perfect to take it along with you, and it hooks up easily and immediately to your computer. I've tried and connected it flawlessly to Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows 7 and XP machines, without a hitch; it does come with backup software but I don't use it for that purpose so I haven't tried that. It's running very fast if you connect it via a USB v3 connection but since it's backward compatible it's still reasonably fast running over an older USB 2.0 connection. I use it over two weeks now, to comfortably shuttle a full working drive loaded with a massive stack of Portable Apps (if you have a small netbook, this external is a real space and life saver) and all my working documents back and forth, which is traveling a lot lighter than schlepping a whole computer around. I'm very satisfied with it.

It's an inexpensive way to back up your critical files and has plenty of space for home use, and probably a small business too. I backed up 2 of my 3 computers (XP & Windows 7) and still have plenty of space. One drawback though, when you create a boot disk, it doesn't tell you that it has completed the task and keeps telling you to insert a disk. I ended up with several disks until I caught on... DOH! All in all, I'm satisfied and would recommend it...money well spent.

I didn't need a 1T hard drive to back up all of my files. This one was perfect. I still have tons of GB's left. All I needed this for was my pictures and songs because my internal hard drive is on its last life line..

I have owned this device now for almost 2 Years and have had no problems with the Device. I keep it in my Backpack where it get bounced around while walking and has not failed me yet. The device has a Great Rubber wrap around it to help absorb any shocks or bumps that it might take. I have accidently dropped the device(not recommended) and it has worked perfectly. The USB 3.0 is great for the faster R/W Speeds. Excelent Device, I am actually thinking about getting the 1TB since this one performs as well as it does.
