Bad Computer For A College Student
9/29/2013

Customer review by An anonymous customer

3.0 stars 9/29/2013 by An anonymous customer

This computer, initially was a good buy for the price. However, after 6 months, the screws holding the screen and the base together weakened and wiggled out of place, making the screen unstable. After a year, the fan motor went out and made an annoying screech and whirring noise while starting up, and when the internal temperature increased. Also, it is not made for college students who are hard on their appliances. The placement of the CD/DVD drive is easily damaged from a slight sideways impact, just from falling to the floor from a desk. If this is your purchase, invest in a durable case and an external cooling unit, like a lap desk fan, and keep it in a stable place, without risk of dropping. Otherwise, a relatively good product for the money. A side note, I recommend investing in the Replacement Plan for any screen trouble.

An Actual Review and not a Rant

Please read in a calm upbeat voice. Ok, since everyone seems to only be ranting, I’ll take it upon myself to actually review this laptop. First thing’s first. You get what you paid for. Majority of people complaining are probably college students or teens. A cheap price doesn’t always mean a bad computer, and this is one of those that prove the statement wrong. Overall, the laptop runs pretty decently even after the year I’ve had it. This is what I do: Play Skyrim—on a daily basis, watch/edit videos with Sony Vegas Pro (64bit version—YES, This laptop runs 64bit software!), Microsoft Office—for work of course, and heavily streaming online music/videos while playing MMOs during the weekend. Now this is over the span of an entire year. And lately, my usage has increased by at least 7%. I upgraded because my older Toshiba Satellite is well over five years old and needed to be replaced. Even though it is old, it still runs fine, but I needed a newer model to keep up with my current tasks. Now, let’s get to these so-called problems people are talking about. I paid out of my own pocket for college supplies including this laptop. And I have not, not even once, seen any type of damage or wear on my laptop. But during my campus tours and classes, I did in fact see people throw their bags around. If you mistreat your laptop, then of course it isn’t going to last. I’ve even seen people slam their lids shut. The case isn’t an Otterbox. It’s plastic. And you know what? Plastic breaks if you mistreat it. Naturally it does over time, but I’ve never had that problem because I’m careful. *hint hint* Another thing I see is people complaining about the CPU. From a techy to you, the CPU is fine. It’s the RAM that’s causing the problem. That and the owner’s lack of care. An easy fix is using the built in “CPU Meter” gadget. Just slap it in the corner. While playing Skyrim, the RAM doesn’t even hit 75%. Even while streaming and playing MMO’s it barely hits the low 80’s. Did I mention I play for about 6hrs nonstop? Also, you don’t need a cooling fan. You can if you want but it isn’t necessary. Just prop your laptop on six coasters. Let it breathe. If you keep it on a flat surface the tiny pegs do little to nothing for cooling it off. Therefore the fan has to work harder, make that horrible noise, and will break. And yes, I tend to be mobile with this laptop. Uninstall all those useless programs asap. Get rid of Macafee. Use AVG or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. They’re free and far superior. Or shed a few bucks and get Bit Defender. It’s the best for a reason. Update everything, even your drivers. If you’re not comfortable doing that, take it to someone who knows what they’re doing. And scan for viruses weekly if you can. If you want a descent computer for work, this is one is good. If you want an entry computer before getting Alienware, this is okay. It’s not perfect, but hey, it’s cheap. Keyword=Cheap. Owner’s lack of care is usually the reason it breaks. Toshiba’s are good and I’ve been using their products for 10yrs. I would give it 3.5 stars but I can’t choose it. I hope this was helpful.

I had the same issues as reported. Initally all was well and it worked properly, then a month in I had to send it off to get repaired because the screen had been cracked (no fault of walmart or toshiba, but my own). I sent it off to be repaired and the issues began not long after it had returned. The screws were loose, the base was shaky....Here we are just at the 2 yr mark and it's officially broken. The screen finally fully detached from the base and it will no longer turn on. If you're looking for something for the long haul I would not recommend buying this laptop. It's a waste of money and energy.
