  • A. Yes, but be sure to turn "off" the "energy saver" feature in the picture settings. Otherwise, the picture will look "dull" because the backlights are either off or set very low when "energy saver" is "on."

  • A. More than likely the answer is NO. You probably can't even get channels without a box. The cable box will process the signal and give you the quality you pay for whether it be standard definition (around 400 lines of resolution) or High Definition (up to 1080 lines of resolution.)

  • A. That was a very good question because there is quite a difference in sharpness between standard definition channels and high definition channels on cable services. I have Time Warner's most basic package offered locally which doesn't even include a cable converter box and the cable just screws into the F-connector on the set. I get both the standard definition and 720p HD versions of all the local stations. However there are not HD versions of other channels like WGN which I watch a lot due to being a Cubs fan. All cable carriers are different, even the same carrier market to market does things differently so you will have to ask. Some charge extra for HD, some satellite carriers charge more for HD also. With a Blu-Ray player which pushes a 1080p picture the image is so breathtaking that I literally gasped. Blu-Ray looks and sounds spectacular on this Toshiba. It also looks great with a 1080p video stream from the internet such as on a 1080p capable ROKU 3 or a Wi-Fi enabled Blu-Ray. There again some of the HD programming on Roku is 720p but some is also 1080p. This is a top value in a HDTV and has been picked as a "best buy" by several independent firms. Yes there are better ones, but they cost more and really aren't that much better in picture or sound. One strength of this one is the decent sound when compared to even some of the more expensive ones. The user interface could be slicker and the remote could be better, but really this is fine for me. I like it with 720p HD cable channels, but love it more with 1080p Blu-Ray and Roku!

  • A. Check with your cable company to see if you must subscribe to an HD package to get HD content. As long as your cable company broadcasts HD content, you can enjoy the HD picture quality.

Father's Day 2012 gift. I've had mine 9 months now. No problems. Stunning picture with no complaints after just two picture adjustments. First, I turned off the AUTO BRIGHTNESS SENSOR and the picture is much brighter now. To do that: 1. Push MENU on the remote. 2. Arrow RIGHT to PREFERENCES. 3. Arrow DOWN to a hidden menu option labeled ENERGY SAVER SETTINGS which is just below the REGZA-Link Player Control label so just keep arrowing down till it appears and press ENTER. 4. In the Energy Saving Settings menu the first listing is Auto Brightness Sensor, with that highlighted arrow RIGHT to set it to "OFF." The default is "ON" but you want it to say "Off." Exit the menu or just wait for it to time out. Second, I set the picture to the DYNAMIC setting. To do that: 1. Press Menu on the remote. 2. Arrow left or right to PICTURE. 3. Arrow down to MODE. 4. Left or right arrow to DYNAMIC and exit. You will see the picture brighten significantly when you set it to dynamic. That's all the video changes I made. I left everything else at the default and I have a gorgeous perfectly balance picture. To set your sound equalization to what I found pleasing boost the bass and treble. To do that: 1. On the remote press MENU. 2. Arrow left or right to SOUND. 3. Arrow down to AUDIO SETTINGS and press enter. 4. Down arrow to BASS and then arrow RIGHT to set Bass to +7. 5. Down arrow to TREBLE and arrow to +1 6. Down arrow to DONE and press enter again. To exit menu at any time just press menu a time or two. Of course you can adjust the Treble and Bass to what you find most pleasing. I wouldn't change the balance L/R adjustment and it should stay at 0. Not only would I recommend this set, I like it so much I bought the 32" version for the bedroom a month ago and just trashed a Sony CRT that was in there. I like it just as much too. This is NOT the best TV set in the world. However it has a fantastic picture. While the sound would be better if you added external speakers with a subwoofer, it frankly sounds better than anything in the price range and frankly sounds better than some others that cost more. I compared them side by side at different stores to different TV's. I'm picky about sound. I didn't want to hook up any external audio. It doesn't have a built in subwoofer, some very expensive HDTV's do such as one high end JVC I looked at, so you can't say it is tricked out audio wise but I can say it is way above average. I worked in commercial radio and even some television audio production (including audio work for CBS-TV) for 34 years and I'm a semi-pro musician also. I know good sound and bad sound when I hear it and I have no idea what the people saying this set has average sound are comparing the audio to. It is LCD not LED brings two issues up. I prefer the brightness of a LCD to most LED sets except the LED sets I can't afford. The second issue is LED TV's will require slightly less service. This TV looks good with HD signals on cable. My cable provider pushes them at 720p. However the first time I watched a Blu-Ray disc on this set I literally gasped it was so good. Truly spectacular with Blu-Ray. I also get a great picture from the Wi-Fi built into the Blu-Ray watching Amazon or Netflix HD movies. I don't think there is a better TV in the price class, except maybe Westinghouse which really is a toss up. Toshiba owns Westinghouse so it is easy to figure out why the two are so good. Other features lacking include a built in alarm clock (it has a sleep timer but no alarm clock) and it could use one more HDMI input, but for me, two is enough for now. Sets with added features cost more and I really didn't see the need for them at this time. But yes other brands do have those features if you are willing to pay more. I like it and think it is a very good basic 40" 1080p HDTV. The site here doesn't allow half stars. I would give it 4.5 stars. For what it is, it is outstanding. It is not the most feature laden set out there, but it is a really good TV and you'd have to spend more to get more. I can't give it 5 stars because there are sets with built in subwoofers, LED sets and sets with more features, but I really didn't feel it was fair to only give it 4.

Put Your Money Into an LG or Sharp TV.

I bought this tv because of positive customer reviews I saw on another site. After getting it home, I am beyond disaapointed. The menus are not user friendly. The interaction bewteen the tv and connected components is choppy, with slow recognition speeds; plus, cycling between general tv functions and the connected components is cumbersome. The digital tuner for over-air broadcast channels is poor and internal menu randomly resets previously scanned channles. So, when you finally get a channel, there is no gaurantee you'll see it the next time you turn on the set. Did I mention the annoying TOSHIBA advert that lights up the screen every time you switch it on? Are there pluses? Well, the size is plentiful. The stand is easy to assemble. The picture is clear enough though you'll need to adjust the settings to "warm" and enhance the brightness for a more pleasing presentation. The . . . um, I suppose I am out of positives. Oh wait! The price. That about does it though. I really suggest you put your money into an LG. I'm kicking myself for not doing that, as I already own one, and I haven't a complaint about it.

Location of Energy Savings Mode

I bought mine at a retail store this weekend for my bedroom. In demo mode, the HDTV produced rich colors and impressive darks, but then again don't all TV's in retails stores look this good? Setup was rather easy as Comcast 480i (4:3) signal was identified and HDTV was up and running in minutes. I also changed the screen output to TheaterWide-1 since I'm not getting HD Cable in my bedroom. After tinkering with the settings, I couldn't get the picture to look acceptable because the screen looked grayed out and too dark. I was about to pack it up and return it but opted to tinker with it one more time. To remedy the darkness of the screen and brighten it up 75% higher, goto MENU > PREFERENCES > Scroll down to ENERGY SAVING SETTINGS (you won't see it on the screen because its listed underneath Regza Link Player Control and Channel Browser Setup. Keep scolling down, then Turn off Energy Saving Setting. If you stand up close to the screen, you can see minor defects of distortion but it disappears after you back away a few feet. For the price of the TV, this is a good bargain.

This is a very good value and a great name in LCD televisions. The only reason I would not have this as my "home theater" television or main viewing tv is that it is only 60Hz. Today's televisions need to be at least 120Hz for the fast action HD viewing. I will be connecting this to a standard definition box so 60Hz is fine. Great value!!

Great TV, but not for Wii U
7/11/2013

Customer review by Major Link

I've been sharing this TV with my dad to play my Wii U system for almost a year now, and when I play my Wii U using 1080p resolution graphics (with HDMI), I get two problems coming from the TV: The screen will black out for 2 seconds, and I sometimes get these static lines that always lead to the screen black-outs. As far as I am aware, my Wii U is neither damaged or defective since I used it on another TV that seemed to be more friendly with my Wii U system. I have recently updated this specific TV model, but unfortunately, it still gave me the screen black-out problems with my Wii U. Toshiba, if you are reading this review, PLEASE make a new update for this new TV model, because it's not being Wii U friendly with me since I am using HDMI to play it.

Great TV

Customer review by Jay

The picture quality is gorgeous especially when watching things in high definition and blue-ray. The tv has a good amount of ports with the ease of connecting it to my laptop or pc when I want to. The tv looks so clear I wish I had picked up a second one. The only problem with the tv like most lcd/led's is frozen pixels. If you look closely you might see a frozen white or black dot on the screen that could be mistaken for dirt. This was on the screen as soon as it can out the box and I had to exchange it for another without any problems. I like to pick at those little details but to most people it won't be noticed at the appropriate viewing distance.
