The explosion of racial hate and violence in a small Alabama town is viewed by a little girl whose father defends a black man accused of rape

The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior - to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 18 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

I didn't read this book until many years after it was published - and since then, I read it at least once a year until I wear out my copies - and each year, I notice things in it that I overlooked previously. It still amazes me that such a talented author didn't write other novels. Her characters are so real, it's as if you are speaking of people you know and have personally met, and the small town they live in, when you attempt to tell this story to someone that hasn't read this book. And it is so delightfully, dryly, worded by Scout, that it is nearly impossible not to interrupt someone to tell them something funny you just read that she said in the book! As if they MUST hear some of the unbelievably astute comments of this little girl as she analyzes some of the situations, and tries to rationalize them. Really FULL of comments that keep you chuckling to yourself all the way through the book. I've never read a book that literally takes you to a town and sits you right down in it to observe the people, the buildings, and the FEELING you would have if you were actually in that place at that time!

The book To Kill A Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee. Some of the main characters are Jean Louis Finch,(Scout), Jem Finch, Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, Calpurnia(Black Cook), Tom Robinson, and Dill. Scout is the narrator and protagonist of the story. She lives with her dad Atticus who is a lawyer in there city Maycomb,Alabama. She also lives with her brother Jem. The reason there is no mother is because she died of a heart attack. Jem is the typical boy who never backs down from a fight. He is also 4 years older than Scout. Atticus their father is also a little like Jem he never backs down from a court case and always help people even a different race which is a super big deal in this book. Another person in their house hold is Calpurnia their cook. She is a strong black woman who helps Scout learn to write from the bible. Another big character is Boo. He is a man who has never came out of his house for over 15 years. The 2 siblings always try to look inside for a peek of this stranger which they think might be dead. He eventually comes out of his home and confronts them but not trying to spin the book too much and that's really all is about him. The last person is Dill. He is Scout and Jem's neighbor in the summer. He is a regular old boy with a good imagination who comes really attached to the whole Boo Radley thing. Here is a quote to describe the main character, "Dear Math, please grow up and solve your own problems so I don't have to solve it for you." The reason I use this is because in the first chapters she is in school and hates it because she knows what to do because she's smart and that's the real first conflict in the story and that is where you see the side of scout for the first time. The main theme of the novel is to never kill a mockingbird. Well to me it means "don't hurt people that are helpless and haven't done anything wrong to you." This is prominent because of the Tom Robinson trail.(Which I won't spoil.) Its importance to the real world is true if somebody did nothing wrong no madder their gender, race, religion, etc don't pick on them because you are being a awful person and sinning like in the book. What the author wanted us to get from this book is that things can change in the matter of one day. Any day can change your life forever. Example is the Tom Robinson trial. Scout and Jem's personality changed drastically after the trail. When Jem moves into adelesence his ideas change after the Tom Robinson trial. No longer is he the power house fighter but he is more calm. While scout after the trail and adelesence, her faithfulness is tested because of the evil of the trial. She eventually develops a grown-up like personalitlity and recognizes evil and good persons. Lastly my favorite part of the whole book is the trial I have been talking about. Tom Robinson goes to court after a prosecution. He goes to court with the man who is white and gets frowned upon for being his lawyer, Atticus Finch. During the trial it gets heated and eventually it takes a turn for he worse. I won't tell what happens but he won't be looking at clouds for a couple years. That is my review for my English assignment a I hope people read the book and see what's happens in the trial.
