Do you need to subscribe to TiVo to use the dvr with antenna?

  • A. Yes, you need a Tivo subscription. That's how it gets the TV programming information. I don't think it works at all without a subscription.

  • A. Yes, you will need to pay a monthly fee of $14.99 to use the TiVo service, regardless of whether you have it connected to an antennae or cable provider. Alternatively you could purchase a membership for the lifetime of the DVR for $499.99.

  • A. Yes. If you buy a used one that includes a lifetime subscription, then your service will be free with the purchase. There are a few DVR's that do not require a service for antenna use, but then you need to program each session like you would a VCR. The TiVo service includes a unique program guide for what is available to you, and allows searches and 'wish lists' for programs not currently airing.

  • A. I do not believe that you need to, but the real strength of TiVo is...TiVo programming. You do not have to know what channel, day, time, etc. is. Just look up the name of the program and tell it, "Get me that!" and it does it.

  • A. Yes, but let me say the $15.00 per month is well worth it. Think what you may have paid for either cable or satellite and you will see $15 per month is cheap. The programming put into the device makes the TV schedule so easy to work. I have used other Over The Air devices and the programming was "free" via TV Guide, but it just did not work very well. Pay the $15 you will be glad you bought the box and service.

  • A. The base model Roamio can use a digital antenna (not included) to get channels over the air. The other Roamio models require a subscription to cable. Satellite does not work with Roamio. Roamio is really designed for cable systems. You will need to rent a CableCard (and possibly a second thing called a Tuning Adapter) from your cable provider, though it's typically only a couple bucks a month.

  • A. If you mean will it work with off-air broadcasts, yes - but you need TiVo service for $15 a month, about $200 for lifetime. If you mean hooking it to an analog cable feed, the Roamio will not receive analog signals. If you simply want to record shows on a current subscription without paying DVR fees, then you will have to check with your provider to see if it is possible. Note the Roamio will work with provider or antenna, but not both.

  • A. I believe that it will do OTA (over the air). For cable, you will need one cable card (M-card) to enable the 4 tuners. This version does not do satellite (I do not think). We did have a DirecTV version several years ago that did, but I do not know if TiVo even makes them any more.

  • A. The answer is YES!!!. I do not have cable or satellite. I "cut the cable" a few years ago. I grab all my TV Over The Air (OTA) and this includes HD. Of the 3 newer models the TiVo Roamio is the only one that supports OTA.

I bought the base unit which will let you record up tp 4 shows at one time. So far I have been very happy with the unit. The navigation could be easier, but once you get used to it, it's no big deal. This is one of the very few units that will let you record OTA's (over-the-air broadcasts from your local stations ) I recently parted ways with my satellite provider and the features this DVR offered were the best I could find. Yes you do have to pay a monthly subscription fee...mine is $14.95/month for 1 year commitment + the $175.00 for the unit + $25.. for the 3 year service plan. However if you buy direct from Tivo you can get the base unit FREE + FREE shipping if you sign up for a two year commitment at $19.95/month + 2 year service contract FREE (I don't know how long this special will last ) If you're going to cut the cord on cable or satellite I highly reccomend this product !!!

Best DVR out there
6/11/2014

Customer review by TimeLordBob

It is the BEST dvr out there. Forget Xfinity X1, TiVo beats it by a mile. Having had X1 for just a week, TiVo has a FASTER guide...zoom through those channels. TiVo has an option to record shows that you'd might like, depending on what you have rated other shows...they have a thumb up and thumbs down on the remote..shows you love you can give up to a 3 thumbs up, one's you don't like up to a 3 thumbs down. You also have many apps...Hulu Plus, NetFlix, YouTube and many others. Though it costs around $15/month for a TiVo subscription, it sure is better than paying that or more to the cable company for their sub-par dvr units. ALSO, if you do NOT have cable tv, this will work with an Over-The-Air antenna. Just hook up your "rabbit ears" antenna, set up using "antenna only" and it will search for all the channels in your area. Not enough storage? YOu can hook up an external ESATA drive and have much more recording space....I think up to a 3TB drive. That would put it at 3.5TB.....about 375 HD hours or 3200 SD hours. WOW!

we love the amount of recording space, user friendly, able to connect pandora, hulu +, netflix and more!! we had been using the dvr provided by our cable company and paying 13.99 a month! we never had enough recording space and would end up deleting programs that we had not watched in order to record new ones. if there was an issue or glitch, the cable company did not seem like they were willing to do much to correct the problem. we finally got fed up, realized how much money we were throwing away while paying their $13.99 a month fee and started checking into tivo products. tivo roamio seemed perfect for our needs and was priced well under what we had expected to pay for our own dvr. now that we own the tivo roamio, we will never, ever go back to using anything else again!!!

Bought this, hoping to use it as a DVR, and not sure if I wanted to pay the monthly subscription, $15 per month. Figured first I'd see what it would do without the subscription. It worked for two days, which apparently is so you can get set up. After that, it won't record at all. Unless you want to pay $180 a year, it's not a DVR. Since it will also cost me $5 per month for a cable card, I'm returning the DVR. The advertising says, 'much more than a DVR'. In my opinion, it's much less. I'll probably be buying a Magnavox. I'll buy another brand of DVR, but don't think Walmart stocks any. Disclaimer: A relative said his worked without the subscription, though the box says it requires one. I made the assumption that my relative was right, and couldn't believe you could sell something like this that only works with a paid fee.

Very Good New TIVO
1/24/2014

Customer review by nuismer

Top 10 contributor

I have had a TIVO DVR for the last 13 years.  When my 7 year old Series 3 died, I had to get another TIVO box.  The current TIVO offerings (Roamio - Series 5) has 3 models.  The only one now that offers HD Antenna is the base model.  So I bought it and set it up. I think that the new Roamio is the best TIVO yet.  It is small and light, has many features, and looks nice.  HDMI is the only connection to your TV now - no more S-Video or Component outs.  The integration between the standard menus and the Internet is much improved.  My Shows now shows the percentage of storage used.  Menu items now include Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, YouTube, MLB TV, WebVideos Hotlist, Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody Music ServiceLite 365, Podcaster, Photos and Slideshows, and Apps and Games.  During setup you must sign up for a subscription or transfer from a old TIVO to get it to function.  I only have two gripes about the new TIVO:  1. The new remote is smaller and a few keys are moved around.  So you may have to look at the remote for awhile (or use or get a universal remote - they work).  2. It now includes a WiFi receiver, but the chip or the antenna is poor -  I get poor reception only 30 feet from my Verison MiFi - all my tablets and laptops get good reception.  But overall, a really good TIVO Dvr.

There is no mention that it will not work unless you subscribe to TiVo Service, minimum one year. No trial of any kind. You will have to shell out at least $380 to see it do it's thing. I did and it runs circles around Cox DVR. I cancelled cable TV because there's nothing worth paying for on cable anymore and will be watching broadcast TV for free. A lifetime TiVo subscription plus the DVR cost will be paid for equivalent of six months of Cox TV. No more fees after six months. I like no fees!

As a DVR this product works quite well. The four tuners makes this very functional for major TV watchers. The only complaint I have is this is NOT what you would expect from a DVR, What this means is if you don't subscribe to the Tivo service, the DVR stops recording after two weeks. Unlike the forgone VCR which would record as long as it received a video/audio signal whether through the tuner or externally.

I bought it for OTA use and it performs well so far (1 week). No sign of multipath interference. It does not handle analog signals on a cable, only digital. This was a surprise. It is compact. I like the RF remote - no need to point. The antenna signal strength meter is useful -it even shows signals too weak to give a picture.

I should have purchased the Tivo years ago. I saved $30 buying it from Walmart rather than buying it directly from Tivo. It's better than any Cable Box/DVR out there. It's very easy to set up although it does take about 45 minutes (mainly waiting for all of your channels to load). The activation itself can take up to twelve hours but that's done by the Tivo service. You can either call or have it activated online. I did it online at about 11pm and then went to bed. When I woke up the next morning I was blown away. The channel guide is absolutely the best in the industry. When you select a show it well tell you if it's available on TV , Netflix, Amazon, the Web, and YouTube. This thing is amazing. Get rid of your cable boxes and go Tivo.
