Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne --New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers--have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face--the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

About the author

Biography of Ford, Debbie

Debbie Ford struggled with substance abuse as a teenager and young adult as a result of her parents' divorce and a sense that she had not lived up to their expectations. She checked in and out of drug treatment centers throughout her 20s and into her 30's, but hearing motivational speaker and author Deepak Chopra speak changed her life. She was influenced by his assertion that people need to "embrace" their demons rather than try to repress or conquer them.

She worked for Chopra for spent several years before publishing her first book, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, in 1998. She discussed the book on television with Oprah Winfrey in 2000 and the book made best-seller lists. Her other self-help books include The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse, The Best Year of Your Life, The Shadow Effect co-written with Chopra and Marianne Williamson, and Spiritual Divorce. She was also an internationally-known motivational speaker for personal transformation who founded the Ford Institute for Integrative Coaching. She died from a rare form of sarcoma on February 17, 2013 at the age of 57.

She has lectured on spirituality and metaphysics for more than a decade and a half and is the founder of the America Renaissance Alliance which is a grass robots campaign supporting legislation currently before Congress to establish a United States Department of Peace. She is also the founder of Project Angel Food, a meals on wheels program that serves homebound people with AIDS in Los Angeles.

Marianne Williamson has published nine books which included four New York Times #1 bestsellers. She also appears on a weekly radio show on the Oprah & Friends channel of XM Satellite Radio.

Biography of Chopra, Deepak

Deepak Chopra was born in New Delhi, India in 1946. He was educated as a medical doctor, specializing in endocrinology, at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He served as Chief of Staff at Boston Regional Medical Center, and has taught at Tufts and Boston University Medical Schools. He recognized limitations in the ways that his medical education approached treatment of individuals. Introduced to the ancient methods of Hindu healing, known as Ayurveda, by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, he saw a way to add a spiritual dimension to treatment of illness.

Chopra's thinking led him to develop a theory that he called Quantum Healing, which combines Western and Hindu medical practice. In 1984, Chopra brought Ayurvedic medicine to the United States, and within a year he established the Ayurvedic Health Centre of Stress Management and Behavioral Medicine in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He is also the founding President of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine and eventually founded the Chopra Center for Well being.

He has written more than 55 books including Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old; Creating Health: How to Wake Up the Body's Intelligence; Creating Affluence: The A-to-Z Steps to a Richer Life; The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams; The Shadow Effect and Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet; Spiritual Solutions: Answers to Life's Greatest Challenges; and Super Brain: Unleashing the Explosive Power of Your Mind to Maximize Health, Happiness, and Spiritual Well-Being... He has won numerous awards including a Quill Award for Peace Is the Way and the grand prize at the 2005 Nautilus Book Awards for The Book of Secrets. He also writes novels including The Return of Merlin; Soulmate; and Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment.

Reviews

Review by Library Journal (2010-05-01)

This cop ro duction of the star spiritual-writing team of Chopra, Marianne Williamson, and Debbie Ford is a component of a larger project, the documentary film of the same name, which features these authors plus several other famous faces, including Verdine White of the R&B group Earth, Wind, and Fire. The shadow is the name they give to the fears, inhibitions, and unspoken impulses that impede us and lead to self-destructive behaviors. Their essays here deal with the history of the shadow, methods for dealing with it, and the relations between the shadow and the soul.

Verdict: By virtue of its authors alone, this title will command a wide readership among spiritual seekers; its concerns, too, are real and timely.
