About this item

Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, "The Pacific" is an epic ten-part miniseries. "The Pacific" tracks the intertwined real-life stories of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie, John Basilone, and Eugene Sledge - across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War II. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day. "The Pacific" is based in part on the books "Helmet for My Pillow", by Robert Leckie, and "With the Old Breed", by Eugene B. Sledge, as well as original interviews conducted by filmmakers.

Languages: English, French, Spanish and Polish, Subtitles: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, Czech, Greek, European Portuguese, Korean, Featurettes.

"Historical Backgrounds": Five-minute prologues that set the stage for each episode with additional historical footage narrated by Tom Hanks; "Making 'The Pacific'"; "Profiles of 'The Pacific'": Delve into the lives of the real Marines featured in 'The Pacific'; "Anatomy of The Pacific War": Explore the historical influences and cultural perceptions that led to the merciless brutality in the Pacific theatre of World War II; "'The Pacific' Enhanced Viewing": Learn more about the Marines, and gain deeper historical understanding of the battles with this enhanced viewing picture-in-picture experience; "'The Pacific' Field Guide": Allows viewers to navigate through the major events featured in 'The Pacific'".

The show is as good as the Band of Brothers, and really could only be watch High Def to get the full affect. I compared prices before my purchase and Walmart ONLINE and Amazon have it for the same price, everywhere else sells it for $75.

If you liked Band of Brothers then you will love the Pacific. Blu-Ray makes it even better.

Personal stories on the men who fought was really good. Battles were depicted well. Couples relationships showed way too much. We could have understood without all the flesh display. But I would still recommend this series.

Surprising disappointment

This was given to my husband as a gift, since he was so fond of "Band of Brothers". Since this was a Spielberg/Tom Hanks production, he expected the same quality and was deeply disappointed. The story was supposed to be a documentary, but it turned out to be more of a soap opera--very shallow in comparison to BoB, with superficial plot lines. Each disc was only about 40 minutes long, which was a distinct surprise. We felt that the respect for the Marines' efforts and sacrifice in "Pacific" was clouded by the "boy-girl" relationship stories. Sorry- just not what we expected!
