The Earth lies shrouded in darkness...And it is our world no longer.

Two years have passed since the vampiric virus was first unleashed upon humanity--and nuclear winter has cast the poisoned world into eternal night. The remnants of the living who were not turned have been subjugated--with many imprisoned in camps to be bred and bled for the sustenance of the Master's vast vampire army.

Yet the fight continues. Dr. Eph Goodweather, of the Centers for Disease Control's biological threats team; his former colleague and lover, Dr. Nora Martinez; and the exterminator Vasiliy Fet lead a band of freedom fighters aided by Mr. Quinlan, the half-breed offspring of the Master, who now is bent on revenge. At humankind's darkest hour, one of them may hold the key to salvation. But a traitor is among them. And who will be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so that others may live?

Reviews

Review by Library Journal (2011-10-14)

The final book of the best-selling "The Strain Trilogy" (The Strain; The Fall) picks up with the destruction of the human race by the vampire plague. It has only been a few years since the outbreak, and the world has been reduced to near darkness in a post apocalyptic winter. The surviving humans have been enslaved, tortured, and fed on by the reigning vampire race, but a rogue team of survivors have banded together to search for the ancient vampire leader, the Master (who we learn has produced a half-blooded heir). The humans aren't alone.

Dubbed "angels", another group of otherworldly forces also want to overthrow the vampires. Fast-paced and plot-driven like the previous books, this installment incorporates a generous amount of religious symbolism and disappointingly focuses more on the vampire hunters than on the bloodsucking spooks. Newcomers could pick up this book, but the story is best appreciated by those who have read the preceding novels.

Verdict: Dark, violent, and regrettably predictable, this volume marks a mediocre end to the trilogy. Horror and dark fantasy readers will most likely be satisfied despite the series' evident drift from the imagination of the inaugural book.

Review by Library Journal (2012-02-15)

In this final installment in Del Toro and Hogan's trilogy (The Strain; The Fall), the motley crew of resistors (including hard-boiled gang members, a CDC physician, a pest control expert, and the mysterious Mr. Quinlan) unite to kill The Master and wipe the vampire presence from the earth. Not an easy task-there are few ways to kill a vampire. The method selected provides the main suspense, but the authors are skilled in character development and even manage to make New York City a major story element. Daniel Oreskes, the reader of all three books, keeps the tension flowing and brings the series to a thrilling conclusion.

Verdict: The authors have produced perhaps the best vampire fiction in recent years. The Night Eternal can be enjoyed on its own, but libraries also should have the previous titles. Twilight fans, beware: these are not your cutesy, sparkling vampires!
