Book Information

The following content was provided by the publisher.
The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterpiece, first reached these shores on October 21, 1954, arriving, as C. S. Lewis proclaimed, "like lightning from a clear sky." Fifty years and nearly one hundred million American readers later comes a beautiful new one-volume collector's edition befitting the stature of this crown jewel of our list. With a text fully corrected under the supervision of Christopher Tolkien to meet the author's exacting wishes, two large-format fold-out maps, a ribbon placemarker, gilded page edges, a color insert depicting Tolkien's own paintings of the Book of Mazarbul and exceptionally elegant and sturdy overall packaging housed within an attractive slipcase, this edition is the finest we've ever produced.

About the author

Biography of Tolkien, J. R. R.

A writer of fantasies, Tolkien, a professor of language and literature at Oxford University, was always intrigued by early English and the imaginative use of language. In his greatest story, the trilogy The Lord of the Rings (1954--56), Tolkien invented a language with vocabulary, grammar, syntax, even poetry of its own. Though readers have created various possible allegorical interpretations, Tolkien has said: "It is not about anything but itself.

(Certainly it has no allegorical intentions, general, particular or topical, moral, religious or political.)" In The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (1962), Tolkien tells the story of the "master of wood, water, and hill", a jolly teller of tales and singer of songs, one of the multitude of characters in his romance, saga, epic, or fairy tales about his country of the Hobbits. Tolkien was also a formidable medieval scholar, as evidenced by his work, Beowulf: The Monster and the Critics (1936) and his edition of Anciene Wisse: English Text of the Anciene Riwle. Among his works published posthumously, are The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrn and The Fall of Arthur, which was edited by his son, Christopher.

Rated 4.9 out of 5★ by 12reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by GORGEOUS book and WELL worth the price! This book is GORGEOUS and Wal-Mart sells it for much cheaper than other places that I have found it online. WELL worth the money. Similar quality books sell for much more. Bought as a gift and the recipient was ecstatic. 01/01/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great edition of Tolkien's fantasy masterpiece The Lord of the Rings is really one long story, so why is it usually offered for sale in three volumes? This edition comprises the entire journey of Frodo and his companions from the Shire to Mordor and back again. The dust jacket is a beautiful leather with a soft feel to it, very good in the hands, and the typesetting and binding are perfect. It *is* a little bit large and heavy for comfortable reading, but I've adapted--although I wouldn't buy it for my grandmother. 10/23/2008
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Amazing. First off, the book itself is a great book. Deep, eloquent, and long. If that's not your style, still, give one of the, if not the, best fantasy epics of our time a try, it'll be worth it.Second, about the physical book itself, it's beautiful. From the outer sleeve, with Tolkien's original drawing of Barad Dur, to the cover of the bok, with the ring inscription, Elven Rings, and the Eye in gold and red on the cover, and the gilded edges make the book an elegant addition to any library. Also, who can't mention the two-color maps of Middle Earth, and a more detailed map of Mordor and Gondor? They're some of the best I've seen. 01/01/2008
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great book, not so great service. I ordered this book for my daughter for St. Valentine's Day. It was supposed to arrive on the 15th but it didn't and the following Monday was President's Day, so it did not arrive until the 19th. Then, when it was delivered, it was not well packaged. The book is wrapped in shrink wrap, which is great. But then they just threw it in a box without protecting it. There was paper shoved in around the book to help with the excess area of the box, but not enough of it. And the book was not padded at all to prevent damage. Luckily, there was no major damage done, just a small crumple on the corners. My daughter had already waited long enough and didn't want to send it back so we kept it. But I have to say, I was surprised that the packers did such a poor job. The book itself is wonderful. My daughter loved the fold out maps and thought the cover was really cool with the embossed gold foil. Only 2 very minor things: 1). This picture makes the book look a really beautiful shade of blue. Ours is a very charcoal grey and the emblem on the cover is not as large as what is pictured. Still beautiful. 2.) The fold out maps are really cool, but they were very tricky to unfold without tearing the page where the paper creases. Other than that, couldn't be happier with the book. Just wish their service had been as good. 02/21/2013
Rated 4 out of 5★ by The book shipped in about 5 days, which is perfectly normal. I got the black version instead of the blue (which could be my fault for clicking the wrong thing, I'm not sure), which isn't a deal breaker, but it isn't ideal either. The map was slightly bent in on itself and tore a little when I opened it, and a few pages were bent towards the middle. This is no big deal, but sense it's a collectible with a hardcover and a sleeve I took off a star, but I might be nitpicking. Overall, it is great and much cheaper here than other places. 07/27/2013
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Beautiful bool I got this book for my brother for Christmas it is a beautiful book it has two maps and the out side of the pages is gold and it even has a red ribbon book mark like other reviews said it is so nice that he didn't want to read it because he didn't want to ruin it and it was only sixty bucks for the whole trilogy it is an amazing buy plus the shipping was fast 12/24/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★ by This was a great bargain! The price was wonderful on this book. It was a gift and my son said it is so nice that he hates to read it. Afraid that is will get damaged. I'm not disappointed and neither is he. Thanks, Walmart. 03/01/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 Great Book! I love the book and condition of the book! However I expected Walmart to ship faster. It took over two weeks for me to get my book. Product "lord of the rings" is awesome though... 03/07/2013
