The Imus Ranch Record

About this item

Radio shock jock Don Imus gets a lot of press for his often controversial opinions, but few people seem to give the crusty talking head credit for his charitable work. Among Imus' charitable activities is the Imus Ranch, a nearly 4,000 acre cattle ranch in New Mexico that hosts sick children throughout the year.

Along with major corporate donors, the Imus Ranch raises money through radiothons, food and cleaning product lines, and by selling books written by Imus' wife, Deidre. The latest fund raising project is near and dear to Mr. Imus' heart. An avid music fan, Imus was directly involved in the making of The Imus Ranch Record, a collection of cover songs chosen by Imus and performed by some of his favorite singers. New West Records is donating profits from the album to the Ranch.

The Imus Ranch Record, like the radio personality himself, is a little rough around the edges in places but full of heart. Patty Loveless kicks the album off with a raw reading of Fleetwood Mac's "Silver Springs." Loveless, her voice stripped of any kind of effects, delivers a pure mountain soul performance. Before listeners can finish absorbing Loveless' gorgeous contribution, they're hit with Delbert McClinton's blues juiced version of "Lay Down Sally." McClinton turns out a dusty take on the Eric Clapton hit.

The artists Imus chose for this project, which was spearheaded by former Nashville A&R queen Tracy Gershon, are as eclectic as the songs. You have Big & Rich firing up their 'music without prejudice' machine for a slamming cover of the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right To Party." Two tracks down the line honky tonk maestro Dwight Yoakam goes hillbilly for a romping rendition of the late Doug Sahm's "Give Back The Key To My Heart." Yoakam is at his roof-raising best on the track.

John Hiatt and Vince Gill close the album out with a double shot of cool. Hiatt works up a gritty interpretation of the Bottle Rockets' "Welfare Music," while Gill does a weepy translation of the country classic "A Satisfied Mind." The latter was reportedly recorded immediately following the funeral of Porter Wagoner last year, which explains why Gill's high lonesome voice aches more than usual. "When it comes my time," Gill wails, "I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind."

By the sounds of it, Imus has more song sense than most radio programmers; the man should be spinning albums instead of stirring up controversy. The Imus Ranch Record is a great collection that was put together for a great cause.

The CD of The Year

If you only buy one CD this year, this is the one to get. It doesn't matter if you didn't think you liked this kind of music before; the ballads range from heart-warming to heart-breaking, and they're all different enough from each other to stand on their own merit. The fact that the 13 artists on this recording volunteered their talent and time in order to raise money for the Imus Ranch for Kids With Cancer is just another reason to love this compilation of beloved classics, done by artists who have never recorded them before, and in a way you'll never forget.
