For anyone who was concerned, I just picked it up and this is definitely the full 5-disc DVD set, not a version without extras like the Unexpected Journey Walmart exclusive was.

Better watching the DVDs

I was somewhat disappointed in both Hobbit movies so far when I saw them in the theater. But watching the extending moves in DVD, I have come to appreciate them more. Partly, this is because with the DVDs, you can watch each movie in two parts, which helps because the movies felt too long in the theater. Also, the extended scenes definitely add to the movies. Furthermore, watching the movies for a second time, I have come to better appreciation for how Peter Jackson is tying The Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. When Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, he had not yet conceived of The Lord of the Rings stories and so the books do not tie together as well as they might have. Jackson has done a fine job of reworking the story in the movies so that The Hobbit works well as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. Finally, watching the appendices has helped me to appreciate how much work was put into designing the sets for the movies - places like Beorn's house, which does not take up much time in the movie, and yet much thought and work was put into its design.

The five-disc edition of THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is overflowing with goodies. First off, you get the Extended Edition of the film, which is 25 minutes longer than the theatrical cut and worth every moment. Then go to the third disc in the set and you get The Appendices Part 9---in-depth background on the making of the film, the creation of the characters and sets, Benedict Cumberbatch being directed by Andy Serkis, Peter Jackson returning as Carrot Man, the Prancing Pony, and so much more! And THEN you get to the fourth disc, which finishes up Part 9 with the music of Howard Shore. But wait! There's more! Now, still on the fourth disc, we get into the Appendices Part 10, which completes on the fifth disc! So much enlightening background that I've had to watch it all three times already, and then go back to the film to notice wonders I'd missed on the first and second go-rounds! The five-disc set won't set you back an arm or a leg, and goes perfectly with the Extended sets on the three LOTR movies (which I KNOW you have memorised) and the five-disc set on the first Hobbit film. Too bad we have to wait until next Christmas for the five-disc edition of THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES. There and Back Again, indeed!

Great version of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

I was pleased with this DVD set. I loved the extended scenes. A must-have for any Tolkien or Peter Jackson's movie version fan. The additional footage brings in some interesting aspects - but at least one of those extensions may not make sense if you haven't also seen the extended version of the first movie release. I am not able to watch 3-D movies because it makes me dizzy and I don't have a Blue-Ray, so I was glad to find this release version.
