T-mobile coverage maps not for data

Mostly works in a major metro area (Detroit / Auburn Hills) . I bought this for travel. I carefully entered zip codes for all areas I normally visit and checked T-Mobile coverage before I purchased it. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there was claimed coverage pretty much everywhere I like to go. I also bought 5 GB data for $50.00 US. Then I actually started to travel. The Hotspot turns on and never stops searching for signal. Everywhere I want to go - No 4G, No 3g, not even EDGE. Nothing. I went to a Mc Donalds and used their free wifi to look up T-Mobile and I called them. I remained courteous, but I still go the runaround for nearly an hour, being transferred from person to person. Finally I reached someone who told me that the coverage was on rented towers, and that data was not available on rented towers. Bottom line - they (T-Mobile) lie about the coverage, and the hotspot is essentially worthless for my needs. My advice is don't buy this if you want to use it outside of major metro areas.

I live in Socal and ordered online delivery....after waiting a week, it finally came so I went on Tmobile's site and discovered that when I selected the $35/3.5Gb-60day plan (on T-mobile.com) , They added tax to the pre-finalized transaction. ... so I read some advice on another (walmart)review and instead, bought the tmobile $35 Mobile Broadband Prepaid Pass from Walmart.com and was not charged for tax...Hooray ! The unit works fine and appears to go on a standby mode (when exiting wi-fi mode from my tablet) which displays "X" users instead of between 0 - 5 users. Very nice.....when I'm ready to use it again , I press the power button and it switches back from "X" users to "0"..then back to "1" when i go back on wifi mode on my tablet. I would recommend this to anyone intending to get supplemental wi-fi service for their mobile devices(except for streaming media or uploading/downloading as the data will deplete quickly )while away from a home or business network. kudos !

I don't like unreliable wifi, but love MiFi

I bought this 3 weeks ago and took it on vacation. It worked in the car en-route and provided internet access to my Itouch and Kindle. I've used it with my Itouch to Face Time Video with friends with Ipads. When I checked in at my destination I was informed that my apartment does not receive their free wifi due to obstacles, but no other rooms were available. I fired up my Mifi and am getting 4 to 6 mbps download speeds on my laptop. I placed it on the balcony where it gets the best signal, but it was hot and humid outside. I am sitting inside the condo with air conditioning, but I get a strong signal through the glass patio door. I've been doing a moderate amount of internet surfing, but no video, and I've only used 500mb in one week. I am so glad I bought this. It's the perfect cure for unreliable wifi. There have been so many times at Hotels that I could only get wifi in the Lobby, now I can connect in my room.

I read some good reviews about this T-Mobile 4G Hotspot and compared with devices by other companies. Local stores didn't carry this so I ordered one online. It arrived in two days. But I couldn't activate the device. I called T-Mobile and was told that the device was not scan activated at the time it was sent out. I took it to the local Walmart and found the same answer. Had to return it right there. Bad experience. Further search turned out that one Walmart store a little further away had it. So I bought it there and it was activated immediately in the parking lot. It works like a charm. We can have several computers, iPad, iPhone connected in the house. For speed, I didn't feel much difference with cable internet connection. The $35 card gets 3.5GB data or lasts two months. It's good for travel. The battery does not last very long if connected. But I can always plug it in. It's worth the money. I would recommend this device.

    Slight activation problem

Since my local Walmart does not carry this product, I bought it online at walmart.com and had it shipped to the store for pick-up. When I went to activate the hotspot and had entered all my info, it gave an error message that it could not be activated online and that I needed to call T-mobile. Once I got through to a live person and read them the sim card #, the rep told me that I had to return to the store that I had purchased the hotspot and have it scanned to allow for activation. So back to walmart. Luckily I found a knowledgeable salesperson that understood the problem. Basically had to return the item for a credit and then re purchase it and have it properly scanned. Got home and activation was a breeze. So if you buy from walmart.com and have it shipped to a store, make sure you open the shipping box and have the product scanned to allow activation.

I can only afford dial-up $14.95/mo. It takes 2-5 minutes sometimes to open an email or website. I use the computer about 10hrs a day. Mostly for email, research websites, face book. If I purchase the 3GB-2 months, $35 T-Mobile prepaid card, will it be enough for my usage? Can I use it for a cell phone? What type? Thank you.

    • A. This device might becomes expensive for you. It's more of a backup plan, not an affordable internet provider. It's the same solution as satellite, who can afford it? So I think for you the best, absolute best, is this. Look at Walmart's house brand wireless, it's called Straight Talk. You can buy an Android phone for under $300, one that has all the bells and whistles, and the data plan is flat fee, $45 per month. You won't be able to watch videos or play music, but you can't do that now. Your situation is why I suggest you look at a smart phone and Straight Talk is the leader in affordable wireless Internet.

    • A. Fast is relative, however 4G should be much faster than your dial-up. It's hard to say for sure what your total data needs are, 10 hours per day can add up. However as long as you are not downloading big files or streaming a lot of music/video you should be fine. There's probably a way to see what your data usage has been with your dial-up provider. Not sure what you mean by "use it for a cell phone". If your cell phone has Wi-Fi then it should be able to connect to the hotspot. You could also use something like Skype on your computer to make phone calls, but again mind the data usage.
