"John Grisham takes you back to where it all began . . ."
John Grisham's "A Time to Kill" is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history.
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.
The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?
In "Sycamore Row," John Grisham returns to the setting and the compelling characters that first established him as America's favorite storyteller. Here, in his most assured and thrilling novel yet, is a powerful testament to the fact that Grisham remains the master of the legal thriller, nearly twenty-five years after the publication of "A Time to Kill."

Rated 5 out of 5★ by 8reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Timely and cheaper than other book outlets Walmart's price for the hardcover of this book was less pricey than any others. Received the book in about 10 days. Shipped directly to my home, too. 12/19/2013
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great lawyer story with historical value! Lawyer, Jake Brigance from a TIME TO KILL, is back again in a complicated trial in Mississippi. Again the issues invoke all kinds of emotions and racial prejudices. This time a crotchety loner has committed suicide after a long loosing battle with lung cancer. Probably, no one would have much cared about his decision except for the millions he has left behind in his new hand written will. Explicitly excluding his own children and grandchildren, he's left 90% of his millions to his black housekeeper of the last three years. Of course, lawyers abound, representing separate children and grandchildren, to contest this new will. The handling of the trial case becomes the focus of this book. But the "why" is what makes the book compelling.I found this book especially enjoyable because of all the maneuvering amongst the many varied lawyers and the judge. Seemed very realistic to this non-lawyer reader. One line especially struck me as true: "Trials are not about fairness, trials are about winning." The emotional issues were once again heart wrenching. The characters were so well drawn and became very real to me.Interestingly enough, I just recently read the most recent book by another favorite author, Muchael Connelly, whose Mickey Haller lawyer antics seemed very similar to Beigance. It is definitely the emotional bases of these Grisham books that raise the level of his Brigance books above the average lawyer stories. Definitely made me think about history and the real people who have lived through these times and issues. Thoroughly enjoyed this book! 01/20/2014
