Probably assuming hermit crabs do not climb. I don't know very much about them, but if they aren't climbers than this would probably be great! Probably VERY big for 2 hermits crabs too!

Wow... hermet crabs? That's a creative thought. I think this pen would be perfect for them since they aren't really escape artists. (Mostly... *hermit crab breaks out of cage in garage and gets lost in desert* no really that happened.)

No, Hermit Crabs shouldn&#39;t be taken out of a humid cage.  They can&#39;t breath without humidity.

Would this be good for my 2 hermit crabs?

I have a Siberian hamster it took him about 2-5 minutes to figure out he could get a good enough grip on the bars and climb out. So I doubt a small hamster would squeeze through, but I'm sure it wouldn't take them long to climb out. If you could rig up a cover it might help.

We have this and our dwarf hamster can escape. It is made to be used as you are playing with them and watching them. It is a fun way for them to get out of their cage and you can watch them a lot easier than if they are just loose. One thing we did is to give her a big treat and she puts it in her mouth and then she is too heavy and unbalanced to climb out.

We used to have Robo hamsters that were bigger than Dwarf hamsters and they had a cage that was about the same bar length apart (yes, I've owned this pen) and they escaped ALL THE TIME!

So the answer is, yes, they would definitely escape!

They could not fit between the bars BUT will figure out how to climb out. It's not worth it. Keep looking for something wooden with no foot holds. Good luck.

I have five gerbils which two of them are small, they can't escape between the bars but if they jump alot like mine they can so you might have to put something to cover the top. its a great playpen for them to exersice

I wouldn't recommend it...my hamster is smaller than that and there wasn't much room for her to run about.

i think so sause you don't have to might it to look like a star you can shape it into a square its a great playpen for small aniamls to get some exersice and to get out of their home for time to time

Our guinea pigs love having this playpen out. I bought 3 sets and fit perfectly on
a 1.5 yards of faux-leather mat that I bought from JoAnn fabrics. I'm not using
the mat that came with it since it's not durable. But the playpens, loooovvvveee it!
Our piggies enjoy playing around. They are close to 3 months old and not jumping
off the playpen. I definitely recommend this product.

great for gerbils. my daughter has five but its not a great ideas to put them all in there at the same time don't get me wrong they all fit but they didn't grow up together. we didn't leave them unattended since they can jump high we're going to put something over it to see if it works

This is even better than I had hoped. We fill it with blocks and toilet paper tubes, etc. and it makes a great way for the girls to interact with their hamster without the fear of him getting away.

I'm considering a second!

I bought this product so that my two guinea pigs could run around without fear of escaping. Since it was designed for hamsters, I had to end up buying another one, but that was fine. The mat it comes with is useless. All small animals like to chew and about five minutes after letting my guinea pigs out, there were several large holes. I would suggest throwing it away and using newspaper instead.

If you need a little area for small pets to run around, I would suggest this. I put the two fences together and then taped them to the wall to make a pretty nice size play area.

*The box/instructions do say that you should not leave your pet unsupervised, so be cautious.

Ok product

My kids got Gerbils for Christmas. This playpen offers a little more space for them to run. It is assembled when you receive it you just have to hook the 1 end to make it a continuous pen. I do like that it has the ability to be connected to the cage. I though when I bought it that it came with the connector piece to hook it to the cage. It doesn't you will need to purchase that separately. I like the mat that comes with it ever easy to clean up there mess. You do have to watch small animals while they are in it. One of our Gerbils has mastered the climbing of the up and down wires. I paid more then the price they are showing for it now. Wish I knew that I would have waited.

Bought for Gerbils

So apparently, while I was gone at school 5 years ago, my parents bought this playpen for my guinea pig. Apparently they put her inside and she literally ate the mat! They put the playpen in the living room... cooked dinner in the kitchen (kitchen overlooks the living room) and came back and the entire portion of the mat that is under the playpen was GONE! (Don't worry about my piggy.... she was fine somehow and thought she just ate a giant piece of lettuce).

Now, about the cage. Many people think it is too small for a guinea pig. They are right and wrong in many senses.

It really depends on what size playpen you are looking for. It gives your piggy about the same space to run around in as a regular sized basic pet store cage. Not a lot of room. But if you're looking for something for your piggy to be in without bedding flying everywhere and for them to see the living room world, that's ok.

So if you're buying the playpen just because it has a mat, PLEASE don't buy it.

Also, the bars bend easily and we used to have two escape-artist hamsters who could definitely squeeze between the bars. Though I do think it is smart to have a small spot on the purple panel for you to attach hamster/mouse/rat/gerbil tunnels to, I also think it wouldn't be useful to hamsters anyway.

Cage? Fine. Mat? Not so Great.

We loved this playpen UNTIL they started nibbling the PLASTIC mat and climbing out. Our two gerbils used the playpen about three times BEFORE they figured out they can climb out of it, let the chase begin.

palypen is not ideal for gerbils

I was looking for a pen for my rabbits and when I got it it was for a hamster. Not happy and returned it right away. When I did a search I was specific about rabbit pens and I didn't read enough. Be careful when you search cause they put everything in the same place and not always what you are looking for.

The hamsters may stay in for a while but they will soon find it very easy to climb out. This would be much better if it had a top on it.
