I wanted to find a way to use the leaves I collect in my garden and came across this product. Pros: It offers a compact and practical way to make compost. Good capacity. It does not disrupt the view in my yard. Cons: I don't know why they decided to put so many screws to join the two halves. Both parts could have been designed as interlocking. I think the steel rod in the inside will rust easily. But in general I am so far satisfied although I haven't had the product long enough to see how fast it produces compost compared to a non rotating container.

I did an extensive review of tumbler composters online and this one was the cheapest. I now know why. When it arrived, it was missing all of the hardware. I notified Walmart and they promptly sent a replacement. I then began putting it together. Several of the holes on the metal frame did not match up, so I spent about an hour re-drilling those holes. Then, the two barrel sections have to be connected by 18 screws and lock washers. Well the area to drop the screws in and tighten them are small and hard to reach, and when placed in the hole they were near impossible to tighten. After using WD40, and about an hour later, I had gotten about 6 tightened, the others would not fasten securely. That's when I gave up, took everything apart and reboxed it. All said, I spent 4 hours on this thing with nothing to show for it. Walmart was good at taking them back and refunding my money. But this thing is complete junk. Pay the extra $20-$40 and buy something else.

    Some assembly required

The Suncast Tumbling Composter does what it is supposed to do (use compost to make dirt). It is cheaper than alternatives which I researched extensively and Walmart had the lowest price. It is larger than expected. It looks like a 55 gallon barrel that pivots on it's stand. I like the fact that it has an opening on both sides. There is quite a bit of assembly required and the tools neccessary for assembly are not included. It took over an hour to assemble it and requires someone who is comfortable with complex assembly. The barrel should last for quite some time but I am not optimistic about the stand. It does not appear to be galvanized and metal rusts in Florida. I used the "site to site" shipping to avoid shipping costs and it took 11 days (total) to arrive to my local store. It was a birthday gift for my mother. She is happy with it and looks forward to making lots of dirt.

This is a great Composter. It opens on both ends, is easy to feed and remove completed compost. The dark color allows it to heat up nicely and because it tumbles end to end, the compost is easy to mix. I had another barrel Composter that sat on a rolling base and it was far harder to turn, empty and was too low to the ground. I did not find assembly difficult. I had to leave the old Composter behind when I moved and am now buying the same one to replace the old. It is the best bang for the buck and it held up through Oklahoma summers and winters with no rust or plastic breakdown. I found that if I filled the Composter with browns and greens, I would have a good batch in 6 weeks if it was hot outside and I watered it down inside, weekly. All the other yard waste stood in a pre-compost pile so when one batch finished, there was plenty of yard waste, somewhat broken down and ready to load in the bin.

I got this from another store and paid $145 for it. Wish I would have gotten it from Walmart and saved myself a lot of money! Took less then 5 minutes to get it put together and start adding items. Just fill it half way with your composting media, water it daily, and spin it. The easiest compost I have ever made, sure beats having a big pile you have to turn over with a rake and takes months to break down! We used hay as our base and I really wish I would have used another material. Although it worked, I will use something else this year. My first batch I added all the food at once and it took about a month to compost it. The second batch took 2 months and still had not really broken down the food. I found out later that it was because my husband and kids were adding fresh scraps everyday so the food I was seeing was fresh and it was breaking down the older food it just took longer. I also did not water it as much for the second batch. So keeping it moist is the key. I want to get another so I can have one composting while we fill the other one with scraps! I saved all my fall leaves in bags in the garage so that this year I will be using them as a base instead of hay.

    • A. Items can be added daily but once it has reached a good capacity (enough to make a decent amount of compost) you will need to stop adding new items so everything can break down and make the compost simultaneously. Just remember to add water and tumble as needed.

    • A. I've been adding vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells everyday or every other day, along with shredded paper. Look online to see what the ratio of carbon to vegetable/fruit should be added. You cannot possibly save it all to add at once. I'm barely half way filled, and every time I add, I tumble the barrel a bit.

    • A. Mine is hard to open as well. It is locked on tight to prevent rodents from entering. My husband had to show me how to open it. On the right hand side there is a lock/unlock feature. Make sure it is open to the unlock position and then you need t twist the lid to the left to open. It requires some strength to get it open so don't be afraid to put some oomph behind it. I hope this helps some.

    • A. If assembled correctly, you should lock the tumbler in place using the chrome plate on the side, with one of the ends straight up. Then push the lock on the lid away from the "closed" position. It'll make a "click" sound. Using the S in the middle of the lid, twist in the open position till you hear another sort of click sound and lift the lid.
