Great Machine, Thin Non-Stick coating

We bought this bread machine Oct '08 so that we would never have to run up to the store (nearest one 30 miles) to buy bread again! We've been using it to bake two to three loaves per week since it arrived. It works like magic. We used our own version of the manufacturer's basic white recipe, posting a copy of it on the cabinet door, just above the machine. That means that even if I'm not home when we run out, anyone in the house can make a loaf. The only problem we ran into was that the non-stick coating flaked off right under the paddle. This machine is perfect for small families.

This is my 2nd bread machine, and by far the best! I had an Oster bread machine that lasted maybe two years. For the two years, it made delicious bread with no flaws! I purchased a Sunbeam, and I have had it for 8 yrs. now! I make about 2 loaves of bread a week and numerous loaves during the winter with simple specialty breads. What I enjoy about this machine is I have never had a lopsided loaf or burned loaves. I add my ingredients in order as recommended and perfect bread every time! I have made Banana bread, zucchini bread and raisin bread in this machine as well as blueberry bread. I also have made fantastic pizza dough, and bisquit dough. The only thing I don't like about this machine is I tried to make a gluten-free bread, and the motor and blades can't hold up to the weight of the ingredients; it totally bogged the blade and motor causing it to not mix well. In conclussion, The Sunbeam is WORTH the money if you are not making gluten free breads. It cycles nicely and quietly, has crust options, express bake if you want bread under an hour, and a delay timer if you want hot bread to wake up to or when you come home from work. I would purchase this item and recommend it to everyone.

I used the former Sunbeam Model 5890 heavily for 8 yrs and replaced it with this machine. The redesign of the bread pan shape and increased capacity and flexibilty makes it a bread machine for all recipes--even grandma's. No need to convert amounts or scale down. I also recommend Tom Lacalamita's book "The Ultimate Bread Macine Cookbook" for use with this machine. The pizza dough and bagels are just outstanding. Always use active yeast, and Sam's Club has the best. Also note that the price at WalMart for this product was only $3 more than I paid for the other machine about 8 years ago.

Haven't had a successful loaf yet - will keep trying. Have used tried and true recipes from my previous bread maker that had worn out Had not wanted to spend $300 for a new one of the same brand, but I guess you get what you pay for.

I have three other bread makers of various makes. This is my first Sunbeam. I use this model (and the others) to make just one type of bread: 2lb loaves of Honey Oatmeal. I have not tried any other recipes with this machine nor do I use the express cycle - good bread can't be hurried. That being said, here's my observations: Pros: 1. Makes a very nicely shaped loaf and is very consistent loaf after loaf. 2. Texture and flavor are excellent. 3. The loaves are pleasently moist inside not dry and crisp (if the baking cycle is shortened). Cons: 1. The loaf slices are too high for our toasters. We get around this by reversing the slices half way through the toaster cycle. Maybe the 1 1/2 lb loaf would be better. 2. I have to stop the baking cycle when 20 minutes are left on the timer in order to produce a light brown crust plus have the bread cooked but still moist on the inside. If I let the cycle complete, the inside will be dry and the crust will be dark and hard even though I select light crust. This same problem exists with my other machines. Apparently the designers like hard crust and dry bread. Except for the length of the baking cycle, I am very pleased with it and have no problem recommending this bread maker. I would love to find a machine with a programmable bake cycle, however.

I have been using this product regularly for only 7 months and the paddle is permanently stuck. I have tried everything (boiling water, plyers, etc) and its not budging. I mostly only use it for the dough setting and rinse it right afterwards, but I see others complain of the same problem. The paddle is increasingly harder to turn and the machine is having a problem turning it fast enough now. Also, there is an issue with how well the flour is kneaded into the dough, often times there will be chunks of unmixed flour on the dough. When you do bake the bread in the machine, it is not bread fit for company. It is not attractive and not really tasty either. The crust is often overdone and thick. *Ultimately, while you may be tempted by the low price of this product, it does not last and is not worth it. Spend a few more dollars to get a more reliable unit.

The Sunbeam Breadmaker 5891 is a great machine. We had a previous version of the same model for about 15 years and the motor finally went out. This newer model hasn't disappointed yet. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is we've had it for only a few weeks and not sure on the reliablility yet. But the Breadmaker is quiet, much quieter than our older model and has made bread products just as good if not better than the older model. My gripe with Walmart service is that I ordered this Breadmaker for a present for a holiday and the estimated delivery date was two days prior to that holiday. The actual delivery date was a day after the holiday which didn't go over too well for the day of. If I was rating the service and not the product, I'd give the service two stars or less.

The first loaf tasted like new plastic machine. After that the loaves have been good. I might be able to give it more stars if I had it longer, but lately every electric appliance I've purchased at Walmart has turned into a nightmare.

Today is May 15,2016. My wife and I put our Sunbeam Bread Maker into service on Feb. 14, 2016 four months ago. We make a loaf of bread once every 4-5 days on average. So far we have been totally satisfied. NO COMPLAINTS. There is some noise associated with the machine but not offensively so. Also we found that there are better bread recipes available than those that come with the bread maker. We're rating it 4-star because we want to reserve 1-star for a longevity rating. If, after one year, this machine is still working as well as it is now we will be happy to rate it 5-star.

for your bread makers? do you have to use the packaged bread mix or can you use your own recipe?

  • A. I've used my own recipe - just make sure you have the correct size loaf when you set it for baking and mixing and make sure your setting choice is as close to what your making.

  • A. Use your own water, flour, salt, sugar, yeast, whatever. The loaf will taste better, cost less (after an initial expense for measurilng spoons and cups, and a thermometer -- for checking the water temperature -- and -- most important -- you will know what you are eating

  • A. I have seen the pre-packaged mixes sold all over, but realize any savings would come from using the recipes, therefore I don't use the pre-packaged mix. With the Sunbeam 5891 you get quite a few recipes that are easy to follow, with excellent results!
