Now I've only used it for one day, so I can't attest to durability. But it's made a nice pile of mulch for me already. I'd say about enough to fill two five gallon buckets so far. As others have mentioned, you have to clip side branches off to fit limbs through the hopper. So it's a little tedious. But much cheaper than renting an industrial chipper. And much better than dragging your pruning to the curb and then driving to the store to buy a bag of mulch. Based on the construction, I'd say the weakest part is probably where the plastic body attaches to the metal tubing stand. It may break there after several years of use. We'll see.

I was very pleased. The unit was lightweight yet handled everything I put into it and never jammed once. I also could not believe the small pile of mulch it left after chipping a very large pile of tree branches.

I have a half acer with lots of trees. Branches are always coming down in the yard. This little guy really works. Just take it slow on feeding the branches in the hooper. It takes as advertise up to an inch and half. You wouldn't think it could do the job to look at it, but it meets all my needs. Used it this weekend on maple and pine branches and also prunings from several shrubs. Took them all and made fine woodchips out of the bunch. It nice to have a product that does what it advertises.

Does it handle wet material? I want something to use for chopping up garden and food waste. What is the difference between the $119 and $139 model?
    by Deb 9/2/2013
    • Won't work for food waste.

    • Deb, it would probably work but it is not a garbage disposal--it would be messy and would need to be cleaned. As it is an electrical tool you should be very hesitant about exposing it to water.

    • I think this is not designed for wet material as instructions say to put dry wood through and use dry wood to unjam. Also won't chop small items like leaves and small twigs - they just pass through. Just my opinion.

    • It says no. It will clog with moist items.

    • I would not recommend it. Very small chipping area. wet material could easily just wrap around the blade housing. Wet and electricity I would be concerned.

    • I wouldn't use it for wet garden or food material. It should only be used with twigs, small branches, pruning cuttings and other woody cuttings.

    • How wet? It has to be fed into an electric chopper, so I'm not sure about food waste. On the other hand, it handles fleshy stalks (canna lilies in our case) without gumming up. It should be something that can be fed into a chipper like branches or stalks. (It's not like a garbage disposal that can a lump of stuff.)

I'm looking for a shredder that will shred flower stems, leaves.and small branches. Will this do the job? Other machines of similar design say that the leaves pass right through without being shredded.
    by jim 9/10/2014
    • This is a wood chipper not a leaf shredder. The opening is just 2 inches : hard to insert leaves... but when inserting branches the leaves attached to them will get shredded, although not perfectly.

    • Won't work well for leaves. I fed branches with leaves still attached. Some cut up nicely, some passed through fairly intact and others piled up at the top of the shoot and had to be cleared out. Not meant for mulching leaves. Large flower stems will cut up nicely though.

    • short answer - no I used this on bamboo and it worked great on the canes but the leaves passed through mostly unchanged as did the the twigs attaching the leaves to the canes. The small branches should work if they are straight and dry. I used it on corn stalks but b/c it was still fresh it could potentially clog (even though it didn't when I used it)

    • I'm going to say it's 50/50 on the smaller limbs and NOT what you are looking for with leaves. From what I've experienced, the leave pretty much passed straight through

    • We use it to chop up hay for old goats so it should work for that. the feed hole is small so it is not the best for leaves but it will work great for the stems and branchs
