I did not notice any smell to these mats. My favorite thing about them is they are thick enough to actually pad a fall!

Doesn't smell like anything. I assumed I'd have to air out the mats, but I just wiped them down and called it a day

Do these mats have any odor? Smell like plastic or rubber?

I feel like there is no reason it would be a choking hazard. Even if they decided to nibble on one of the prongs that hook the mats together--they would really have to be determined to bite off a small enough piece to choke on. It seems companies just always have to say that these days. :/

Maybe it's because they could bite pieces off and swallow them. My child is 1 yr and she doesn't even try to do that.

I can only assume that a small child could choke on these if they bite off small pieces. They are a foam-type material, easy to damage or "bite off pieces". I have 5 children and use these. Not to say they wouldn't bite it, but they haven't yet lol!

I guess maybe if they bite a piece of the link part off? Since they are foam material... My daughter has had them since she was 5 months old however, and has never done anything like that.

Because if you have a cat or cats, like me, they will use them as a scratching post/ surface. When they do, small holes form. Then extremely tiny pieces come off. Or pieces stick up. Then a tiny baby or 2 (twins), pulls that piece off and puts it in his mouth. That's why they say not recommended for children under 3. And that's where the small parts come into play. I still use them. I just have to watch him, check the mats daily for tears, and smack the cat every time she does it. ( just kidding)

Why is says choking hazard for children under 3 y.o.? I see no small parts

Not at all, in fact, we've had ours for 3 years and we still use it because it keeps the stains out of your carpet when they get to the toddler stage.

I do not believe that they would be rough or scratchy. They are very soft, not like a pillow, but more like a firm cushion.

Yes - they are textured, but the surface is still smooth overall. I let my son crawl and wiggle around on the mats with his bare legs. They protect his little legs from brush burns unlike the stupid carpet! That's one of the reasons I made the purchase.

No my son doesnt even notice the texture and he just learned to walk, so he still crawls quite often. You can feel the texture, but it doesnt do any damage, etc.

This product is Great!!! I really like the cute playmats that have numbers, pictures & other shapes but those playmats are not very thick. This play mat is thicker & really cushions the play area. I ordered three & put them together for a larger play area. They go together very quick & take apart very quickly. I use them in my living room on hard wood floors. My Husband even commented how comfortable it was when he sat down & played with our Grandson.

I bought this to use as the floor to my daughters playhouse. I put down square cement blocks & the playmats over it then set the house on it. This was she has a soft floor & I have no worries of her getting hurt due to the flooring. I would highly recommend this to anybody.

My son loves playing on his mat.  Unlike other mats its thick and protects him. He doesnt get hurt when hes rolling around learning to crawl. Stays in place. Bought 2 sets of 4. Love it

Safe For Tile!

Thick and solid. Not plush or extra soft but does the job in providing a safe area on the garswood floors. Only downsideis the slippery wax like finish these mats leave behond oddly. Other than that Im a happy camper

When we ordered these mats we were expecting some nice cheap thin play mats for use under my sons playscape to keep grass and weeds at bay outdoors. When we received the item we were impressed. They are much thicker than they appear in pictures and while the mat itself is rather firm it also has a good bit of give to it. We are planning after a move to make an entire playroom with them. One thing we did notice was that after having them on our kitchen floor for a bit after first opening they seem to have made our tile rather slippery where they had been sitting. Not sure if there is some kind of coating on them that rubbed off, or if the texture just "buffed" my floors. Not bad just something to think about if you would be setting them up on that type of flooring and removing them at will.

Great Quality

I am a Pediatric Physical Therapist and love these mats. They are easy enough to carry from the car and can be set up and pulled apart in a jiffy. I use a long sweater belt to tie them together for easy carry.
They provide the right amount of cushion to protect baby's head during therapy and the right amount of firmness (not too soft and not too hard).

Great when doing physical therapy with babies

I am really happy with the mats--they are much higher quality (and thicker) then other playmats I'd looked at. Although the solid color is a little boring--the thickness is nice and the large squares make it easy to put them away for cleaning. I'm using them to make a play area on our laminate floor for my 6 month old. I've seen him fall straight back from a sitting position and not be fazed (although I freaked)! These mats are great!

High quality playmat

This is perfect fort 2yr old's play area which is his north state gate. I like its' thickness which protects my son's feet when he takes his shoes or slippers off. I also have one outside for when he plays with water. Easy clean up and overall good quality.

Happy play area

Was tired of constantly cleaning up spit up off our carpet once our son had learned to roll over in to his tummy..... This is easy to clean, I can move from room to room and also it has provided a gripped surface to help my son learn to crawl!!! There is a smell of the material but by no means is it strong and totally goes within a day or so. Nice to have something that matches our home decor and is for the baby but does not make our home look like a play yard!

Great for babies that spit up !!!

A little harder than expected but they work out since we have hard wood floors and it'll be nicer to crawl on although they do slide around on the floors so you have to be careful or they'll come right out from under you. Would have been nice for them to be slide proof.

Over all good product

We purchased mats at the actual Walmart store, and then ordered additional mats online. The mats online were not the same as the ones that are available in the store (even though they look the same in the online picture, and the dimensions are the same), so we had to return the mats we ordered online and purchase more mats from the store again. We were unhappy with this because they were supposed to be matching mats and they weren't, so we lost out on the shipping and handling (which was a considerable amount because each box of 4 mats was sent in a separate box and we ordered 12 mats).
