The Step2 Lift and Hide Storage Chest would make a really nice addition to your kid's room. It is bound to be a hit with the youngsters with its shape and color. The chest provides ample storage space not just for toys but books and other decorative items as well. The top most part of this bookcase storage chest has a rack where toys can be arranged. Below that is a shelf where books up to ten inches in height can be aligned vertically. Below the book shelf is a kid's storage chest where plenty of toys can be dumped, removing clutter from your child's room. This storage chest comes with an attached lid that will keep the toys and items neatly stored inside. The best part of this Step2 red bookcase is the fact that it is completely safe for kids to handle. There are no sharp edges and no heavy lids that can hurt tiny fingers.

We bought this for our 18 month old son and were amazed that it held all of his toys and books and we still have room for more as his collection grows. It holds much more than you would think. Also very sturdy as my son climbs on it and doesn't tip or move. He loves it and we do too!

So this item is in three pieces and needs to be assembled with two screws, is that correct?
    by little3bella 4/30/2010
    • Yes but very simple. Took my husband literally about a minute to assemble

    • Yes, three pieces with two screws. The top and bottom slide together once you mount the lid. Then the two screws fit through the back of the unit to keep it all together. You'll need a drill as the holes are not pre-drilled in the plastic. I tried assembling it with just a screw driver, but couldn't get the screws to penetrate the plastic.

    • Yes and no. Yes assembly rquired, but it is very easily assembled. First you take the bookshelf place on top in the groves for it, slide onto place but not all the way forward because lid needs to be put on top of box fits under the bookfhelf. you will see place for lid or top, it had legs on lid that just sts on top of box under bookshelf. Once in place push bookshelf forward ad it is assembled. The only thing happen when i put lid on i had it upside down feet up instead of down and it fell off (Lid) Then i slid bookshelf back and put lid on correctly and it works great. Screws came with it but i did not use them because one you have to have a drill to put holes in, second is that if the shelf is slid into groves properly no need for them if you have it in place. Read my review as I feel will help you decide.

    • It is in 3 pieces, top, bottom, & the chest lid. Where you screw in the screws at, their are indentions but if you just use a drill it takes but only a second to put it all together. Hope it helped!

    • It is 3 pieces and two screws. SUPER easy to put together. There is NO way to get it wrong. Directions included, you just need a screwdriver. I would not shy away from because of very minor assembly.

On another store review, people were complaining about this product not having screw holes already made and that the Lid didn't slide properly... Is this true? Another question: This won't tip right? Another question: Can you put books on the very top shelf also? Would greatly appreciate any feedback from fellow parents/grandparents! Thanks!!!
    by MamaHolden 11/6/2009
    • My husband had no issues putting the toy box together. The lid slides fine on ours. It slants upwards and then slides away while stored. I do not think the top shelf would hold books well unless you used something to hold them on the ends. There is not anything to keep them standing upright.

    • Mine had screw holes and lid fit fine. It was super easy to assemble. We actually have two, one in red and one in pink and both were easy to put together. This would not easily tip over. You would probably not be able to put books on top shelf unless you used book ends as well. Hope this helps

    • It has 2 small places where the plastic is a little thinner but not screw holes. You need a electric drill to screw it in. Its very sturdy will not tip. The bookcase part is very big. Holds tons of books big or small. The top shelf could hold books if you bought book ends maybe. I use the very top of it to keep things that are hers but I dont want her getting into. I have two cloth baskets up there to hold everything.

    • I would not put books on the top shelf. I have them on the second, with my daughters stuffed animals placed in baskets on the top shelf. The screw holes are NOT pre-drilled, and YES, the lid fits tight and does not slide as easy as it could. However, it was still the best deal I could find for all of my little ones toys, and the lid is still fairly easy to manage.

    • Ours already had screw holes. Our lid slides perfectly fine. Our 13 month old has actually climed on ours and it hasn't tipped yet and she weighs in at 25lbs. Yes you can put books on the top shelf.

    • if ids doesn't lose properly. Slide bookshelf towards back a little and slide lid back and move bookshelf forward to hold lid in place. I had same issue at first but I figured out that the lid must be assembled under the bookshelf part. Screws aren't really needed in my opinion, if you slide and lock bookshelf into place then it will stay put. My review is that this is a great quality and great price. Read my review. Im pleasantly happy.

    • One of the holes in back was not already made...simple fix. We didn't have any problems with the lid, though it does come off but it not that big of a deal. You can put books on the top. I couldn't see this product tipping over... our daughter actually likes to get in it too.

    • yes, the screw holes aren't there but if you have a drill the nails will easily go into the product. i actually put the nails in with a screwdriver - no type of drill. kind of difficult but i did it and it only took 5 minutes. the lid slides just fine. you can stack books on the top shelf but you can't line them up unless you have bookends.

    • There are divets where the screws should go but no holes really. Took my hubby a little muscle but we just used a standard screw driver....Anything could probably tip but we haven't had problems since it has been full. Books won't really work on the top shelf unless you lie them down.

    • There are indentions where the screws go but no actual holes. It's really not an issue. My lid slides fine. I haven't had a tipping problem yet. You can't stand books up on the top shelf unless you get some bookends. I put them up there flat instead of standing.
