I'm a first time backpacker, and I bought this pack as something to get me started. The waist strap was already partially broken before we even started. I was still able to tighten it within reason around my waist, but could not fully tighten it as it would just come apart. Then one of the zipper pulls fell off. It lacks pockets for organization and convenience. Items in pack are very difficult to get to without taking the pack off. I placed my water bottles in one of the side pockets and after about 3 miles, they were already starting to rip. The lack of sternum strap is also bothersome. We used a webbing strap to tie knots on both sides to help with the load. Instead of exchanging this item, I have opted for a slightly more expensive pack with plenty of pockets and storage.

it is so poorly made and materials are so cheap, that it makes it completely unsuitable for a backpack. The side compartments separate at the seams with the slightest pressure of the hand. Basically it is completely unusable due to poor design, materials and workmanship.

I bought the backpack for my son who is a boy scout. He spent a lot of time researching deals on the internet and decided on this one. It is exaclty what he was looking for!

Good pack for medium users. It has most of the pockets and features a person would want backpacking. Can easily fit a stuff sack sleeping bag inside along with a tent and additional camping items. It has nice side straps for carrying your sleeping pad and extra sweatshirts etc. The internal frame seems strong and it has nice shoulder / waist straps. I wish the fabric and stitching were a bit more heavy duty and would've liked an across chest strap. But all in all, can't beat the value (bang for your buck)!

If you're an occasional camper and don't expect to use this pack for serious hiking/camping, it's a good choice. It's about a third of the cost of a similar size pack you would find at REI and it shows in the cheap construction. It only opens at the top, which is annoying since you need to take everything out to get something at the bottom of the pack. Don't expect it to last 10 years - this pack is good for gentle occasional use, just hope it holds up until the end of your trip.

    • A. Many packers just untie the sleeping back and stuff it into the bottom of the pack. I would say yes, that I would recommend this. There are height adjustments if you pull the middle back pad you will see the height adjustment. The hipbelt should be perfect for the boy scouts. I'm ordering a large from the internet so it will fit me. I really don't see where the straps would break or where the pack would fail. it probably needs a center horizontal strap but for 50 bucks, I'm McGuyver and can put one there with a little epoxy and a strap /buckle connector. I'm 54 years old and for me it's not a bad deal.

    • A. There are two adjustable fabric loops at the bottom of the pack for securing a sleeping bag. Keep in mind that this pack is very tall. If your boys are short it is not suitable. I'm 5'11" and the top of the pack is over my head.

    • A. Yes, it will hold enough for a 13 year old. The sleeping bag can be either tied on the outside of the pack or go on the inside bottom.
